why do all my plants die? info in desc

first tank: 1-4, second tank: 5-8

in my first tank, my jungle val keeps melting and I have no idea why. I had hair grass in there at one point and it was thriving for a few days, then suddenly all died within maybe a week. the Amazon swords seem to be the only thing growing more leaves for some reason. also, in pic 3 shows the roots of my pothos that is on top of the tank- is that brown algae on them or something? or are they dying too? the leaves look flawless up top but the roots look like crap so I cant explain that either. there are atleast some sweet potato roots in the back that are doing good.

in my second tank, I also had hair grass in there and that died too, though it didn't thrive at all. it died rather quickly. I then put that Java fern in there and it was doing good until I saw it had galls. I know you cant really get rid of galls but I removed the leaves that had it and it's still dying (pic 7), so I'm not too surprised. so far I have some rotala in there (it was red but now growing green), some Java moss, a mysterious blade of grass that I have no idea what it is, and some mysterious leaves I cant ID either. those are all thriving just fine but I really feel like I need better plants for my corys. there is also a pothos on top and some sweet potato roots that are doing amazing.

I forgot to mention, I did have a ton of frogbit in the first tank but it all died a long time ago and now it's just barely coming back. it seems like some good leaves will grow and then die shortly after because of, what I think is brown algae, on the roots? I did put a little bit in the second tank too but they just multiply SO slowly.

my problem is I do the same exact thing for both these tanks. tank one is actually about a month older than the other, they are about 3 and 2 months old. I dose api leaf zone in both of them once a week, there is some cheap root tabs in the sand (is that the problem?), and the lighting seems to be good. I bought some cheap Amazon lights but they had good reviews and I have been using them ever since. so how come my first tank is doing so horrible compared to the other one??

What are some plants that are good for shrimplets that don’t need to be planted or attached to anything?

I’ve tried growing java moss I got from petsmart but it never came back from being dry and brown and i’ve had taiwan moss in my tank since June it hasn’t/has barely grown and hasn’t attached its self to the gravel at all. I have a ten gallon with neocaradina shrimp and 4 endlers that’s been staying at around 78 degrees f cause of the heat. I alr have frogbit so I wouldn’t want another floating plant unless it would do well being weighed down or something.

Florida Flag apreciation post

Ive dealt with various bouts of hair algae through out my run in this hobby. Tried all kind of eaters with varying forms success. I finally got to these guys about 2 weeks ago and they have completely devestated it like some kind of algae apocolypse. Its actually crazy how effecient they can be mowing it down.

Rate my 4.5gal nano tank

Looking for feedback on how I can improve my 4.5gal nano tank. I really like the contrast between the Fissidens and Flame moss. The Hygrophila Pinnatifida also throws in a nice pop of red. Would love to continue refining and maybe submit to a competition some day.

Comment your thoughts on how I can improve it!

How it started , how it’s going.

How it started vs. how it’s going
Started with a clean tank, a few plants, and the thought: “I’ll keep this one simple.”
Apparently I lied.
A little CO₂, a few Buce, some Anubias, a couple “I have room for one more plant” purchases later… and now I’m growing a jungle out of the top of the aquarium.
Still learning, still rearranging, still buying plants I definitely don’t need. Still really really enjoy it.
Planted tanks are a dangerous hobby.
Anyone else start out telling themselves they were going to keep it simple?
Now I have a fish tank budget.
It’s getting to be outrageous.

Hardscape: Feedback Wanted

Going for a desert canyon vibe against a blue sky. Background is blue but lighting can change so it doesn’t have to have the blue-green. There is no substrate yet it’s just a rubber mat to protect the glass as I mess with the configuration of the rocks. Substrate will be Fluval stratum capped with black sand. Substrate will be built up behind the rocks to be even with the top of the rocks. So background plants will be decently elevated. The tank will be heavily planted- Carpet plants in front, some mid sized in the middle and tall plants in the back. match the top.

It’ll be low tech - decent light but no CO2. Canister filter.

The tank is super tall vs the rocks but hopefully that will be less of an issue when the rocks are sitting on a few inches of substrate instead of a thin mat.

  1. Does the rock configuration by itself look ok? My brain is a little numb form reconfiguring everything 100x.

  2. Will a little height from substrate + some tall plants help with the “short hardscape” vs “tall tank” perspective?

  3. Should I put a large piece of driftwood like spider wood in the center?

  4. What plants would you use?

What else? Totally open to suggestions.

What algae is this and how to get rid of it?

I have this algae all over the wood which I don't mind too much but then it just spreads onto nearby plants and epiphytes.

I use co2 and the light is a hygger on 80% for six hours. I did have some cynobacteria but used a product and now that seems to be gone but not sure how to tackle this

Any livestock recommendations for my shallow tank?

It's a 12 gallon tank (60cmx30cmx24cm). Currently playing on the idea of a Cory only tank but would love to hear other thoughts!

My bucephalandra is flowering, any special care?

First time I see it flowering. For a while it didn't do so well but I switched to a complete fertilizer (with macro nutrients) because of my floaters and also to promote algae growth for my nerite snails. And I noticed the difference in all plants. :)

Questions: Should I do an extra dose of ferts, or continue as scheduled? It's also maintenance time. Will a water change damage the flowers, or should go about it as normal?

P.S. Don't mind the poor java fern leaf nearby, I really need to do a good trimming in my tank. It's starting to look like a jungle.

My first tank and I’m hooked! Planning on getting a couple more tanks maybe tomorrow lol

2 month old 15gal, black sand, 1 male betta and some snails. Using some spare barina shelf and shop lights. Liquid fertilizer only

In case you wanted to know what Java Moss looks like out of water

I was hoping my Java Moss would grow up this piece of driftwood in my Paludarium, and it's doing so very nicely!

12 inch cube tank update

I posted the hardscape of this tank a few weeks ago. A week ago I added the following plants

Marsilea hirsuta

Dwarf hairgrass

Bucephalandra ghost andn red dragon

Anubias dragonclaw

A few crypts

Red root floaters

Ledstar AQ nano light

No CO2

This is my first time getting a low iron tank and a light like this. I'm liking it so far.

I want to add some more low tech plants to fill in the back ground. I don't want anything that grows too fast but can also grow taller and maybe emerse a bit beyond the water column.

I'm experimenting with a few spare marsilea hursutas nodes, placing them on the driftwoog at the edge of the water column. These guys were from a spare planter outside and seem to be hardy.

Let me know what you guys think!

German Blue Ram (We Assume) Died. How to Find the Body?

We have a heavily planted 20gal tank and our GBR wasn’t doing so hot. We tried our best to keep him alive and added a pump with O2 stones, but at this point we haven’t been him in 3 days so we’re assuming he’s dead. How do I go about finding the body in a heavily planted tank with wood? There are so many hiding places for the fish we can’t see. Checked ammonia an hour ago and it’s still ok for now but fearing an ammonia spike from a dead fish. Considering getting a plumbing camera from Home Depot but would appreciate cheaper suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Any tips?

Just set up my new scape and I think it still looks quite bare… does anyone have any scape suggestions or less needy plants I could put in here as it is a low tech tank? Planning on putting a HMPK star tail betta in here

Fluval’s new ad for their 4.0, I don’t think this is the “flex” they think it is.

Seems like a very weird way to try to sell an expensive fancy plant light, no?

Help with climbing KH and GH. Can’t figure out the cause.

I set this tank up about 8 months ago for caridina shrimp and it’s been a battle to stop the KH and GH from climbing. Substrate doesn’t seem to buffer pH to below 7 like I thought it would. pH usually about 7. KH and GH currently at 4/8 respectively. Any ideas?

Specs:
Water changes and top offs with rodi
10gallon
Canister filter
Low tech
Substrate: Brightwell Aquatics Rio Escuro
Rocks were all sourced from river (all passed vinegar test)
pH: 7
KH: 2-4
GH: 5-8
