My bucephalandra is flowering, any special care?

First time I see it flowering. For a while it didn't do so well but I switched to a complete fertilizer (with macro nutrients) because of my floaters and also to promote algae growth for my nerite snails. And I noticed the difference in all plants. :)

Questions: Should I do an extra dose of ferts, or continue as scheduled? It's also maintenance time. Will a water change damage the flowers, or should go about it as normal?

P.S. Don't mind the poor java fern leaf nearby, I really need to do a good trimming in my tank. It's starting to look like a jungle.

Snail shaped snail trap and warning for ramshorn lovers

This is for sale in Amazon. I thought of buying it just as a trinket for my bookshelf, lol. The only traps I lay are for planaria, not snails.

Now the warning:

If anyone wants to use this, or the commercial glass traps for planaria, and not catch any snails, better cover the side with the entries with a fine filter mesh. Planaria only need a needle tip sized holes to squeeze in. l lost a couple ramshorn babies because they got trapped in the curved entries of the glass traps. Interestingly there was also a baby MTS trapped but... she reversed her march, just like a car, and got out slowly! I didn't have my phone at hand to catch it on film, sadly. But aparently ramshorns can't do this, they need to rotate and there isn't enough space for it in the trap entries.

I thought of sharing this here, in case you use traps in snail tanks.

Found this in my old beach shell collection: is this a nerite snail shell?

I was going through my old shell collection and found this among the more common sea shells. It looks like a nerite snail shell... but...

  1. nerites aren't found in our shoreline, I'm in Portugal, in southern Europe;

  2. this collection is almost 40 years old and the aquarium hobby was not as wide spread as it is today, and the only snails we found in the shops were the Apple Snails, especially the Golden Incas (now forbidden to import here in Europe). I have been an aquarium enthusiast since I was a child and I don't recall ever seeing a nerite for sale at the time.

So, if it is a nerite, it probably got swept away in the current and ended up here. I live in Lisbon, basked by the Atlantic and there is a possibility it got swept away from Africa either by a current or hitchhiking in a boat hull...

Or is this another type of marine snail?

I'm just curious. Thanks! πŸ˜€

My new snail. :)

Just got it yesterday. I went to my LFS to get some supplies and there it was, a small Sun Nerite Snail (Clithon sp.) thornless pink variety. :)

Is this love... ? :)

As requested, here is the pic of my shrimp "dating" and sharing a waffer. Don't they look like a couple sweethearts? :)

Note: they didn't fight for the food, simply shared it. :)

My snails :)

As the title says, showing off my snails:

- Nerites, three types. The oldest and my favourite is my beloved Black Racer, almost 4 years in my tank. I had one more zebra, but it escaped the tank and didn't survive. :(

Unlike the other Nerites my Black Racer doesn't climb to the lid, at least I never saw it there. He also seems not to move as fast as the others. Dunno if the species is more quiet or it's a personality trait. It's a very chilled snail.

- Ramshorns: pink, red and crossovers. They are really really cute. :)

- MTS: all descendants of my old mamma, now deceased. She hitkiched in plants and lived for more than 2 years in my tank, she grew really large and had a very pretty cream stripped pattern, all the adult offspring resemble her. I find them very pretty too. :)

- Final pic.... just a bonus pic of my other pet snails. :)

I'm thinking of setting up a new tank for apple or mystery snails, and maybe a tiny one for an Assassin pet, but it's a project for later.

Baby MTS snails surface feeding on spirulina powder

Today I fed my Opae Ula tank (brackish water) with powdered spirulina and the baby snails also came to feast. :)

Update on my first tank :)

As I said before, I had at least five berried females, all breeding one after another. And the result is... a lively little tank with lots of baby shrimp in different sizes, including the last floaters. One big happy family. And the babies eagerly surface feeding are so fun to watch! 😁

Question for experts about berried females

Hi! This is a question for u/GotsSnails and other experts that have kept and bread these shrimp for many years. How often can a female get berried in a season? Is it common for them to get multiple clutches in a year, or only once or twice?

I ask this because my first tank is going through their fourth batch of floaters and I see another berried female! I set this tank last September with 12h shrimp... so, either half of them were happy females... or the same females got berried again. My second tank, setup this February (but with water and hardscape seeding from the first. And 2 MTS snails) had around 7-8 shrimp. now is on the 2nd batch and also with another berried mamma!

So, I read these shrimp are much slower breeders than freshwater shrimp but I'm having an opae ula boom on all fronts, lol. I'm glad they're happy, and the floaters and shrimplets are so fun to watch, but I'm worried because my tanks are small, betta kits of 1.5 and 2.5 gallons, respectively. Although, I guess I can buy a couple jars and squeeze them somewhere, lol.

Little floating balloons:)

Nowadays, my zen moment is to watch the Opae Ula larvae floating in the water. Nothing like arriving home, tired from a busy day, and set my eyes on them, slowly moving like little reddish ballons floating away in the breeze... Slowly, idly, without a care in the world... Truly soul soothing. :)

A pity this is just a temporary phase, but hopefully there will be more. Until then, the moment is saved on camera for a future zen moment.

(Edit: Sorry for the low quality, but this was filmed with a crappy phone by a crappy photographer πŸ˜†)

Curious Big Beauty :)

I wish I owned this tank and this fish, lol. Or that I was scuba diving... πŸ˜‡

This little video was taken in the Lisbon Oceanarium. As soon as we approached this side of the tank, here came this curious and beautiful grouper to pose for the picture. We could tell it was really used to grabbing attention. And I really felt like a diver in a nature documentary, it was the most magical moment of this wonderful afternoon.

I thought it would be nice to share it here. :)

Question: Cambarellus diminutus and Ramshorn and MTS snails?

I'm planning to get a single male Least dwarf crayfish (Cambarellus diminutus) for my invertebrate tank, so it will remain on the smaller side. This tank has orange neocaridina shrimp, pink ramshorns and beautiful cream tiger striped MTS. I know dwarf crayfish eat snails, and I expect it to prey on baby snails, thus controlling their population. But my question is, will a small male Cambarellus pose a threat to adult or nearly adult Pink Ramshorns? I've read shrimp will be safe, and I suppose adult MTS will also remain safe, they're sturdy and have a trap door. But I'm worried about my ramshorns. If you keep this crayfish with ramshorn snails, what's your experience with them? Thanks!

My marimos and their friends :)

Hi there! I thought it was time to post here my marimo balls. Mostly are in my two aquariums, which are unheated, but recently I decided to setup two little marimo ball displays.

My oldest and largest marimos are in the larger aquarium and are now 4 years old. All the rest came from there, by division of a couple marimos I "stole" from there. :)

Yummy surfboard πŸ˜†

This is an old video of my beloved Black Racer, surfing and munching a recently added cuttlefish bone. He really loves them! Not parasnailing... but snail surfing whie enjoying a little snack. :)

Note: you'll notice the tank is very small but that's a little tank I use for emergencies. I was doing a deworming treatment in my aquarium and I wasn't sure if it was safe for nerites, so they were housed temporarily there.

Planaria and CPOs

I was thinking of getting a single cpo for my community tank. This tank has zebra danios, white clouds, amano shrimp, neocaridina shrimp, nerite snails, ramshorns, MTS... and planaria, lol.

The planaria population is under control, and the shrimp and snails are breeding very well. My nerite snails are quite "old" too. What concerns me is that I read that crayfish molt very frequently, so I was wondering if the planaria would pose a risk to them during this phase.

Anyone has experience with cpos being in a tank with planaria or any advice (besides setting the traps more frequently)? Thanks.
