Kinkan Gifts in Tempe, AZ

Kinkan Gifts in Tempe, AZ

This was my first time in Kinkan Gifts, in Tempe, AZ & it was so fun! The employees were amazing, they fit so much in a relatively small footprint shop, & it's just so cute! It's also the only retail store in Arizona that carries Hobonichi! They had some Colorverse inks as well. Anyhoo, I got some tiny letter paper n envelopes, masking seals, tiny planner stamps, Tombow mechanical pencil & uni refill leads, & vinyl stickers. I can't wait for my planner to be delivered tomorrow so I can start using my new stuff! 😍

Made my own inserts!

I've been using a passport size TN, & making my own inserts for that - Which has been a whole thing & super fun. (I might have made about 50+ inserts over the summer...)

But recently I've been thinking about trying the larger standard size for my writing journaling pages.

So I made 2 of my own standard size TN inserts today, with just some random paper I picked up at the local art donation center (shout out to the Art Resource Center in Tempe, AZ, USA). The paper seems to be fountain pen friendly overall, so fun surprise.

I'm cooked if this size ends up being good for me, lol, as I'm gonna make & get all the things. 😆

The other pix also show my current passport insert & the passport junk journal/scrapbook I'm working on, as well as the stock I've made so far...

I got into this hobby just 3 months ago...

It was the Pilot Varsity that was my gateway into this hobby...

Top to bottom,

- Pilot Metropolitan stub nib

- 5 pilot Kakunos all M nib

- made some 5 Below disposables into reusables (what I use when I experiment mixing inks)

- Hongdian Black Forest long knife nib

- 4 Simplpens in various nib sizes (after some time with them, I really like them)

- Pilot Prera F nib (is always inked with Platinum Carbon Ink Black for art-ing)

So far, I really enjoy stub nibs for writing - I like a juicy ink & the ones that sheen are my favorites. I want to get more Preras in different nibs, it just feels so good in my hand & sketches like a dream.

I clean my pens every 2-3 weeks since I write a lot. I can't stop buying inks every payday. And I'm already looking for my holy grail sheening purple/violet...

I can't wait to get into this hobby more!

[request] sympathy and encouragement cards? [USA - Arizona]

TW/CW: cancer / death / complex mother-daughter relationships / mental health / grief

TLDR: My mom passed away from aggressive cancer two months after diagnosis. We had a deeply complicated relationship, and handling her end-of-life care alone has left me pretty hollowed out. I’m hoping for a little written encouragement while I navigate this rollercoaster of loneliness and grief.

On a milestone birthday, I found out my mom had a brutally aggressive form of bladder cancer.

Two weeks from diagnosis, it spread to 16 new places.

Four weeks from diagnosis, they stopped tracking metastasization & transitioned her to palliative care.

Eight weeks and a day from diagnosis, my mom was gone.

When she got sick, I carried the entire weight of her care, hospice, passing, and post-mortem affairs on my own.

(Much love to my partner for helping me as much as they could, but the majority of everything was on me.)

I do want to share the precious gift my mom gave me in her final hours, her last words to me were, "love you too."

That moment feels so delicately fragile in my mind...

Mourning a mother who was so damn hard to love, is a profoundly lonely road.

So I could really use some tangible words of love right now - Any words of solidarity, even just the smallest note, I could really use a little light right now.

Thank you so very much.

If allowed, I'll share the obituary I wrote for my mom in the comments.

Made my own passport-size notebooks from discarded paper & a thrifted Dr. Seuss book! 📚✨

Hey everyone!

I’ve gotten super addicted to making these little B7 / passport-size notebook inserts lately.

Most of the interior paper was saved from my local Buy Nothing / free group, & the covers for this batch were made from a copy of Oh, The Places You'll Go! that I snagged at a thrift store for 99¢.

I’m honestly thinking about selling a few of them down the road for around $5 just to keep funding the addiction, but for now, they’re sitting proudly in my "Completed Crafts I’m Admiring" pile.

My Facebook friends aren't really the crafting / journaling types & didn't give them much love, so I wanted to share these with people who get it!

Thanks for looking!
