is it normal for rent to go up every single year? (VA)

just got my lease renewal and it's going up $75 a month. literally nothing in my apartment has changed or been upgraded. is this just standard practice everywhere now? feels like they just do it because they know moving sucks tbh.

do landlords even care if ur a good tenant anymore

i pay my rent early every single month. i never throw parties and i even fix the small to myself cause i dont wanna bother maintenance. now they hit me with a $150 rent increase and my shower has been leaking for 3 weeks. i literally asked for one thing to be fixed. do u guys think im a good tenant or am i just being played here? cause it feels like they just wanna punish the ones who actually take care of their property smh

Single-family rentals can improve test scores, according to Virginia Tech

Interesting research out of Virginia Tech on rental housing and educational outcomes. The study found that when families moved into single-family rental homes in higher-opportunity neighborhoods, students saw measurable academic gains, including improved test scores. The researchers’ argument is basically that rental housing can give families access to stronger school districts and communities they may not have been able to afford through homeownership alone. I’ve seen a lot of ire lately around single-family rentals, so I thought this was an interesting perspective. The study frames rental housing less as a permanent substitute for ownership and more as a gateway to opportunity and future economic mobility. That can benefit families across the socioeconomic spectrum, but especially younger families still building their finances or working families trying to live near both good schools and major employment centers. A single-family rental may be what allows someone to access a better school district while working at a nearby hospital, university, or job hub without needing the upfront capital required to buy there.

rent went up $200 but i got a 25 cent raise lol

make it make sense. just got my lease renewal and rent is up another 200 bucks. but my job told me budgets are tight so i only got a 25 cent raise for the whole year. is the economy really just this bad right now or are they just squeezing us until we have nothing left. working 40 hours a week just to still be broke is crazy to me rn. so tired man

i noticed my electric bill doubled this month and when i checked the breaker box, i found out the landlord wired the common area hallway lights and the AC for the whole floor to my meter lol.

i confronted him and he literally said well u use the hallway too so it makes sense. he refused to fix it and told me to just deal with it since my rent is below market value. i’m actually shaking right now because i can barely afford my own bills tbh. what do i even do?

my landlord is raising rent again next month and i might have to move back with my parents at 30. the system is so cooked and it feels like it’s never gonna get better tbh
