Soapbox: The Dwarf Troll Slayer should have Hatred: Big Guy
This is the hill I will die on.
Sure, okay. I see the reasoning. They're called a Troll Slayer, so it's cute to give them Hatred: Troll. But it's bad for the game, it's bad for the lore, and it's been bugging the hell out of me since the start of the season.
My argument is twofold.
One, the rules argument. This is currently intended as trinket text - i.e. a rule that that's made to add fluff to the player without a big impact on the game. However, trinket text needs to be cute without warping how the player works in game. Think about something like mtg's hundred handed one - it can block 100 creatures, but fundamentally that rule isn't wildly different from just "can block all creatures",
In this case, it suddenly makes the player better against specific teams (i.e. those with trolls). If this was aimed at e.g. bad matchups for dwarves, I'd be fine with it. But suddenly they'll outperform against a set of stunty teams that dwarves already are good at, while making no difference against others. Why is this?
Two, the lore argument. Troll Slayers are disgraced dwarves who are exiled from their society, with the only way to clear their name/honour being to die a worthy death fighting the worst monsters the world has to offer. Yes, this is often seeking out a troll, but it's really just seeking an uneven battle, against a powerful foe, or where they're outnumbered - etc. An Ogre, a chaos spawn of some kind, a yeti - all of these would be considered worthy targets for the slayer oath.
Both issues would be fixed by giving the Troll Slayer Hatred: Big Guy - it'd cement the rules setup of slayers as "a player who is built to take down high strength enemies", and it'd better fit the lore of, "this player is driven to fight the biggest foes."
Had to get this rant out. Thoughts?
Edit: because it's come up a few times, I should clarify; I absolutely don't think Hatred: <Positional> should be something you get from serious injuries in leagues, that would be way too big a mechanical change. I just think it should be available as a trait for roster players - in this case specifically the Troll Slayer.
