Stone Field in a Box: playing Blood Bowl in the stone pitch

Hi everyone! I've already presented here the Stone Field in a Box, the crowdfunding campaign I'm working on for a physical pitch designed by Kraken 3D Studios. The campaign got its funding goal within 18 hours and it's nearing 200% in the first couple of weeks, yay! I wanted to show you some pics we just took of the field with some of the add-ons (bleachers, dugouts, scoreboards, etc.), as well as how the pitch looks painted in different styles (we posted an update a few days ago with the color charts for painting these, in case you want to check it out).

Well that's all from me, best of luck in your weekend matches if you play any, and if you want to visit the campaign here's the link: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kraken3dstudios/kraken-fantasy-stadiums-stone-field-in-a-box?ref=56s073

Dice - pips or numbers?

I'm creating a blood bowl dice set mould to start creating my own custom bloodbowl dice. For the standard D6s - do people prefer pips or numbers? I've already made my D16 mixed (not-spindown)

Side question - any UK based gamer interested in a personalised set in exchange for promo pics of the dice with your team?

You can view my dnd sets for an idea of my styles (hoping to get the first bloodbowl set ready within the fortnight)

Amazon thrower advancement

So my thrower hit 16 spp and can afford a stat up. She already had block along with every other positional. I am thinking hoping for passing to help abuse the prayers that give spp for passing and just give me more options. What does everyone think?

If no one can score in last 2 turns of the half what do you tactically do? Just fight?

Got to the end of a half last night, ball was roughly in middle of the pitch, many of both team surrounding it, no one would have been able to get a touchdown in their last 2 turns. Is there anything worth doing with these turns?
We continued trying to block/push and pick up the ball for practice, but what would you recommend? Just attempting to injure the other team??
(Pic from earlier part of the game, just because I thought it was pretty cool)

You guys loved the 40k and AoS Name Generators I built, so I’m making more! Just launched a Blood Bowl version 🏈🩸

A little while back, I put together some procedural name generators for Warhammer 40k and Age of Sigmar on my site, Fat Dwarf. The response from the community was absolutely amazing, and seeing so many of you use them to name your armies and Kill Teams has been awesome.

Since they've been getting so much traction, I’ve decided to keep expanding the roster! I just finished coding a brand new one specifically for the gridiron: the Blood Bowl Name Generator.

It’s built with a completely new gritty, athletic theme and includes 24 official teams. You can roll for specific positions (Blitzers, Wardancers, Apothecaries) and even generate team franchise suffixes (like the Altdorf Smashers or Skavenblight Rovers).

You can check out the new one, along with the originals, right here:

NEW: Blood Bowl Generator:https://fatdwarf.co.uk/pages/blood-bowl-fantasy-name-generator

Warhammer 40k Generator:https://fatdwarf.co.uk/pages/warhammer-40k-name-generator-all-factions

Age of Sigmar Generator:https://fatdwarf.co.uk/pages/age-of-sigmar-fantasy-name-generator

Let me know what kind of brutal, punny names you roll up, and drop a comment if there's a specific game system or highly-requested faction I should tackle next. May Nuffle bless your dice!

Rules question - Prone troll standing up getting distracted?

Was playing a game yesterday where we ran into a scenario where we where not sure what the rules wanted us to do. A troll had been knocked prone and was trying to activate with a move action. It rolled for 'Really Stupid' and failed - does the Troll both become prone and distracted at the same time? That's how we ruled it since we could not find that you where limited to one condition at a time. Was this correct?

Best regards! / G

EDIT: just realized that this matters theoretical, if the prone player also get distracted because that changes if the player has a tackle zone if he stands up outside his own activation (For example with Pick-Me-Up) he would stil be distracted and have no tackle zone.

Ok. I'm proud of this one.

I think this is the first time I'm satisfied with a mini I've painted. It went from random goblin to my favorite player for now :D

Too bad he's gonna get curb stomped the first game he'll be in.

Would the fellwater troggoths fit for trolls? (Snotling team)

Hi! So I’ve been looking to finish off my snotling team. I don’t really want to buy the same blood bowl troll mini 2 more times, so I’ve been looking at alternatives. I know most people buy the rockgut troggoths, but is there any reason the fellwater troggoths get overlooked? My main concern is the base size being 50mm usually means that there might be slight overhang even with 40mm bases, but that’s true of the rockgut minis as well. They’re big models, but at the same time less tall so them being prone wouldn’t take up multiple spaces. Is there a glaring flaw I’m missing?

Which blood bowl is better?

I was looking at the offers and I saw that the Blood Bowl 2 Legendary Edition is very cheap and it caught my attention, but I don't know if I should get the 3 which is more recent.

Are vampires good for an old player trying to get back in

Yo, I am planning on getting back into Bloodbowl after many years away and I wanted to know if vampires are a good team to use to get back into the game? They were amoung my favorite teams to use in Bloodbowl 2 along side Tomb Kings and Halfings. I already bought the box set for vampires cause they look cool.

Also would like to know on if they play any different from the old bloodbowl 2 team that I was used to playing, mainly with the new positions they added.

Homebrew to encourage skill variety?

Bloodbowl feels awesome to play, and I am one of the ones who thinks that leagues are the pinnacle of the experience. However, there are some shortcomings that are tough to avoid when designing a game.

But to me, one of if not the most obvious shortfalls in a very fun progression experience, is that each category more or less has the “correct” pick. (General is block, Ag is dodge, passing is leader, strength is Guard/MB, devious is dirty player, and I can’t really speak to mutations but it does seem more balanced). Now GW did attempt to head it off with the elite tax, but A. I don’t think it went far enough, B. It only addresses the very top of the skill board, not the bottom, and C. The meta is still to fire players that get the bad skills if you random because of team bloat, essentially erasing them from the game.

To me, there are a few solutions, though I would like to hear more.

The one I think that is most feasible for a homebrew league to implement is more tiers on skill costs. So we have the elite skills already. But imo there should be more tiers (with better names than these), e.g. ALSO THESE TIERS ARE JUST EXAMPLES. I AM SURE I HAVE MIS-TIERED SOME. I would like suggestions, but please understand it is more about the tier idea than the specific skills in the specific teams.

Elite ($50k): Same skills as GW

Great ($35k): The other skills we usually see taken: block replacements (besides brawler), tackle, wrestle, strip ball, break tackle, sidestep, grab, kick, steady footing, hit and run, sprint, sure feet, pro etc.

Fine ($25k): The skills you don’t mind seeing come with your team:
Thick skull, defensive, jump up, fend, accurate, nerves of steel, on the ball, strong arm, bullseye, leap, diving tackle, brawler, etc.

Situational ($15k): Diving catch, cloudburster, dump off, fend, steady footing, taunt, etc.

Rare ($10k): Fumblerooski, punt, multiple block, safe pair of hands etc.

The reason being is fumblerooski is fun! Bullseye troll is fun! A lineman with frenzy/hit and run is fun. But these aren’t things that are viable in the game currently, which is a bummer. Now obviously the tiers will be wrong, and some skills are stronger on certain players than others so we still won’t see a break tackle hefty or something like that. But I think there needs to be encouragement to have some obscure skills.

The other ideas are revising existing skills which is essentially rewriting the game (splitting block and dodge into offensive and defensive uses), rebalancing teams, and just not worth going into. So what do you think? Any other ideas? Any better tiers/tier pricing than what I put out there?

Made a little Kratos for my friend as part of a full Norse team

The model screamed the God of War, if I was better at green stuff I would’ve gone further and done his axe

BB II. Trouble with Skaven team

So I have recently got Blood Bowl II and been playing it.

I seem to do ok with my brutal teams like Dwarfs and Chaos but then I made a Skaven team and I'm struggling hard. I've played two league matches with them and while I can win on points I'm getting my team butchered. Each game I take two injuries and a death.

Now I don't know if I'm facing the wrong teams. First was Dark Elves and second was Undead. But I'm willing to guess it's more my play style being used to brutal teams and wanting to get in there and make holes to run the ball through.

So I was hoping to get some advice from expert coaches on how better to run a Skaven team so I don't keep dying which is making it hard to advance in league play since I keep having to spend my winnings on new players.

Also PS. I am not sure if my choice of sponsors is part of the problem. I got a sponsorship from Skaven Cheese obviously and they got naming rights over the team and named us the Cheesemongers. But they also send over lots of cheese before games and I've even caught some goblins sneaking in and force feeding my rat ogre Skaven cheese before matches. I think all the cheese before matches is making my players slow and catchable. I need them hungry to win. Should I try to change sponsors?

Steps for first game

Ok so just got the 3rd season starter set. Started reading the rather weighty book and there is a lot to take in!

Even just deciding on the roster for the teams is a little daunting with all the different things you can add such as cheerleaders / fan factor / inducements / re-rolls etc.

I would like to get playing first and then try and then pick up some of the more detailed stuff later.

What I don't want to do though is omit anything that is fundamental to how the game operates.

Clearly defaulting the weather as "Perfect Conditions" is an obvious one.

In a nutshell I'd like to play a basic but balanced game with a friend and try and explain as few as rules as possible to them without trying to remember 900 little details!

So two questions:

  1. Using the starting teams from the box what would be a recommended team roster for each for an initial match using as few additional rules as possible?
  2. What other rules apart from the weather table would people recommend omitting for a first game?

Tomb Kings Lineman

This is my test model for a new Tomb Kings team. The colors are a recreation of the scheme I used on my very first Tomb Kings army, back when they got their first Warhammer Armies book. Ah, nostalgia.

(Player number will be added when the whole team is painted.)

Soapbox: The Dwarf Troll Slayer should have Hatred: Big Guy

This is the hill I will die on.

Sure, okay. I see the reasoning. They're called a Troll Slayer, so it's cute to give them Hatred: Troll. But it's bad for the game, it's bad for the lore, and it's been bugging the hell out of me since the start of the season.

My argument is twofold.

One, the rules argument. This is currently intended as trinket text - i.e. a rule that that's made to add fluff to the player without a big impact on the game. However, trinket text needs to be cute without warping how the player works in game. Think about something like mtg's hundred handed one - it can block 100 creatures, but fundamentally that rule isn't wildly different from just "can block all creatures",

In this case, it suddenly makes the player better against specific teams (i.e. those with trolls). If this was aimed at e.g. bad matchups for dwarves, I'd be fine with it. But suddenly they'll outperform against a set of stunty teams that dwarves already are good at, while making no difference against others. Why is this?

Two, the lore argument. Troll Slayers are disgraced dwarves who are exiled from their society, with the only way to clear their name/honour being to die a worthy death fighting the worst monsters the world has to offer. Yes, this is often seeking out a troll, but it's really just seeking an uneven battle, against a powerful foe, or where they're outnumbered - etc. An Ogre, a chaos spawn of some kind, a yeti - all of these would be considered worthy targets for the slayer oath.

Both issues would be fixed by giving the Troll Slayer Hatred: Big Guy - it'd cement the rules setup of slayers as "a player who is built to take down high strength enemies", and it'd better fit the lore of, "this player is driven to fight the biggest foes."

Had to get this rant out. Thoughts?

Edit: because it's come up a few times, I should clarify; I absolutely don't think Hatred: <Positional> should be something you get from serious injuries in leagues, that would be way too big a mechanical change. I just think it should be available as a trait for roster players - in this case specifically the Troll Slayer.
