Called out sick after being hospitalized and my nanny family hasn’t replied.

Hi everyone,

I wasn’t feeling good at all this weekend and ended up in the hospital. I stayed overnight and was discharged today (Sunday), but I’m still not feeling well physically.

Around 11 a.m. today I texted my nanny family and let them know I wouldn’t be able to come in on Monday because I need another day to rest and recover.

I’ve been their nanny for about a year and I’ve never called out before. The only time I left early was because NK got me sick and I was so weak I couldn’t finish the day. Other than that, I’ve always shown up and have been really reliable.

It’s around 10 p.m. now and they still haven’t responded, which is making me anxious because they usually text back really fast. I feel awful about missing work, but I also don’t think it’s a good idea to take care of a toddler when I’m still feeling this sick.

Am I I overthinking this? Should I just show up to work tomorrow if they never reply, or should I assume they saw my message and stay home to recover? Has anyone else been in a situation like this? Just curious

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some outside perspective on this.

I started a nanny job on September 29, and my contract says that my PTO resets every 12 months from my start date. Based on that, I understood that my PTO would reset each year around late September.

I recently used the rest of my PTO for an upcoming trip (Friday through the 21st), because I was planning around that September reset. But now the parents are telling me that PTO actually resets in January. This was never mentioned in the contract.

When I brought it up, they said January is just easier to track and that it’s how things are often done in other industries. The mom also asked if I had any vacations planned later in the year, and I said no, since I’m about to go on a trip now. She suggested it might be best to just switch to a January reset.

The issue is that if I had known it reset in January, I wouldn’t have used all my PTO right now—I would have saved some for later in the year. I made my decision based on the “every 12 months from start date” wording in the contract.

Also, something that’s really confusing me is that if the reset moves to January instead of my start date (September 29), that would actually make my first PTO cycle about 15–16 months instead of 12. So it’s not just a preference difference—it would mean going longer than what the contract says before getting new PTO.

I jsut don’t know what to do. Is this normal or fair ?

MB also mentioned that it would be harder for them to find childcare if I took another vacation in October or November. I do understand that it can be challenging to arrange coverage, but those months are still about 6–7 months away from now.

At the same time, I feel a bit conflicted because I work hard and take my job seriously, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect to be able to use my PTO—even if that includes another trip later in the year.
