Hoffa fat pad impingement/irritation

Around a month ago I would just notice that occasionally my leg would catch weirdly when walking, a sudden sharp sensation that would go away after “shaking out my knee.” (I am not sure if this is related to my current injury but I am including it anyway).
I now have this catching sensation much less frequently if at all.
Around a month or so ago I noticed that occasionally when walking I would feel a slight presence inside my left knee, never severe just an annoying presence that would go away shortly after stopping. I also noticed that my leg no longer “wanted to” straighten fully, I could straighten it but it just didn’t feel natural. I decided to go to my physio and he diagnosed me with Hoffa fat pad irritation, he gave me an exercise to do which involved straightening leg against a resistance band. A few weeks go by and I notice slight improvement at best, I continue with my normal run training as a competitive middle/long distance runner and I don’t have pain while running only occasionally when walking.
However, today during a walk I noticed that the pain was perhaps worse than previous days. This was particularly noticeable later today walking to the park to do my run, during the run I felt fine but now this evening I notice pain even at rest which I never used to have. I put voltarol on my leg, not sure if this will do anything.
Yesterday I had a hard track interval session which went great with no pain during the session.
I have been massaging the area with an ice cube regularly as instructed by my physio and have experimented with taping.

I will update this post with how I feel tomorrow morning , hopefully this is only a mild flare up.
