Calf strain/pain who knows

I was on my last station for triple threat today (ski erg) but since I had tricep issues, opted to sub with jump rope

Literally 10 seconds in, felt a sharp pain my left calf and at first, didn’t think too much of it. But after another 5 seconds I was like nope…can’t even put weight on it

I’m super bummed becuase I’ve been going for like 2 months and love it but idk how I’m gonna sub everytbjnf since you kinda need your calves for most things.

As context, I’ve been an athlete my whole life (basketball) currently 38 and still playing. But since 2022 I’ve had this weird, extreme calf pain that pops in either calf and I can’t explode or out weight on them.

I’ve actually been good since I’ve been doing f45 and haven’t had calf issues for almost a year.

I’m not sure what is going on.

Like even bodyweight calf raises will get my calves super sore.

Btw, I’m 5’11”, 170 and can dunk, played basketball A lot and never had problems ever with calves prior to 2022.

Anwyas, any thoughts/experience would be appreciated since I thought o was finally in the clear with this calf stuff but now idk.

Sprained ankle grade 1 or 2?

Injured my ankle playing football around 12 days ago. Had significant swelling/bruising initially and couldn’t walk properly. X-ray showed no fracture. Saw a fracture clinic doctor who tested the ankle and said the ligament isn’t torn, just stretched/sprained.
I can now walk normally pain-free and balance on the injured foot, but I still have some swelling and sideways movements hurt, especially around the side/back of the ankle. I can’t jog comfortably yet.
Doctor said around 3 months before returning fully to football, which seems long considering he said there’s no ligament tear. He also told me not to use an ankle brace.
Anyone had something similar? How long until you were able to jog, cut/change direction and return to football?

Does it help with calf strain

Injured both my calf’s in 10k road race, been told that injecting bpc 157 & tb500 (wolverine) will help the healing process much quicker, has anyone tried this for strained calf’s ( probably grade 2) … it’s been 7 weeks post injury & I’ve been injecting for just over a week now… don’t feel any different thus far?

Alternates to running for teen

My teen has just been diagnosed with osgood schlatter. He's deloaded for 2 weeks but still pain when running. Running is his sport, but what can he do to cross train until it calms, swimming? Bike riding caused him pain the other week but maybe need to increase height on seat?

Any suggestions would be great!

How does one not get injured running < 20km/week

This is honestly a pretty crazy post to make, but i have been trying to fix this issue for about 6 months now, and at this point i figure asking for help couldn't hurt anymore than I have myself 😂 (unintentionally ofc). Some things to note, im ~60kg, Max HR of 215 (22yo), and a CURRENT FIELD TESTED LT2 of ~195 (it is normally higher when i am fitter). Idk how relevant that'll be.

Little backstory. I completed my first marathon in 2024, finishing with a 3:46 (5:22/km). Hands down my proudest achievement. Now it wasnt smooth sailing, I was dealing with calf problems for a decent part of the 6.5 months I was training for it, but i did come to the start line on healthy legs. Fast forward to late winter/early spring 2025, and i start half marathon training, with a goal of going sub-1:40 (PB is 1:45 from 2022, it is VERY improvable). Welp, that didn't come into fruition, ended up with shin splints, anterior if I remember correctly. I spend some time in mid 2025 rowing just to keep myself entertained and injury free.

Mid/late 2025 comes around. I decided to train for sub-6 in the mile, and sub-21 in the 5k. Welp, I got injured during that time, got hit with the double whammy, both posterior and anterior shin splints. It was completely my fault, I built up the mileage too quickly, and I was overstriding and heel striking like a dumbass (which is NOT how I normally ran, I have zero idea how my running form degraded that badly). Anywho, i managed to PB both distances, 5:53 and 20:30 respectively, while also hitting a 10k PB of 43:25. After that training cycle, I give some time to recover, and I go back to running. Very low volume and intensity, and ontop of that i fixed the issues in my running form. within 4-5 weeks, I have issues with my shins again. I drop the volume entirely, and decided to row through the winter, as I wanted a bit of a break from running, as I was getting a little frustrated with the issues I was having.

March 2026 rolls around, I try to start running again. I really make an effort to build volume far more slowly, and I started doing a decent amount of walking to keep the intensity even lower during this time. I made it up to about 16km running and 4-6km walking, before having issues again after about 7 weeks (you'll never guess where 😂). I once again, drop the volume entirely as id like to not have a stress fracture, so I pick up cycling, as it was a form of cross training for me during rowing when I had power outages. I had a goal of just finding a 100km, which I was successful in, finishing in 4:10 in June. This is one of my proudest achievements, right below the marathon for me. After giving some time to recover, I come back to running again, and surprise surprise, I have issues again, I think the combined run/walk volume was like 18km when I decided to drop it (like 5-6 weeks later).

I'm very tired, and annoyed about this issue. I feel like I've tried everything to address the problem. Fix my running form? Didn't work. Build the volume exponentially slower? Didn't work. Increase volume either by lengthening the sessions but keeping the number of days lower, or by keeping time on feet lower but increasing frequency? Neither of those worked. Decrease the intensity of BOTH my easy and hard efforts (thats not even a good description, considering my shins complain at the thought of a session above LT1 intensity)? Also didnt work. What about incorporating walking and slightly decreasing the running volume? Also didnt work. All of this is happening, whilst my aerobic and musculoskeletal fitness is dissolving 😂 (bro i can barely run 8:30/km in zone 2 rn), because yk, not being consistent doesn't exactly lead to progress in the sport (crazy concept isn't it).

Honestly this feels like a sick joke, and I feel insane writing this out. I have tried to figure out why im so prone to injuries for years now, even before the marathon (I've had issues like this since middle school, tho they weren't nearly as bad). I sleep more than enough, and the quality is pretty decent 90% of the time. I eat very well, and enough, I drink more than enough water. I also lift and do basic S&C throughout the week, though it isn't a lot. I know this is a long post, but im making it because I need some adive to figure out what to do here. I know that there's probably something im missing, and I know that im clearly still doing something wrong even though im trying to fix what I can.

I apologize for this post coming off so negative, I just wanted to give as much context as I could, and admittedly, im still frustrated with all of this. I will end on a positive note, though. I have done a couple of run/walk sessions over the last week or so, just to test the waters. Doing like 10x1min (60s walk) or 5-7x2min (90s-2min walk) sessions keeping the effort at like a 2-3/10. Things have gone decent so far. Only doing that like 2x/week rn, just because im bored. Anyways, thanks for getting through this wall of text. Any advice is appreciated.

Goodbye Chicago

It has been 5 weeks of crying, x training, attempting runs (got 10 mi in last weekend) but after a surf injury in Morocco and now further injury likely from compensating I think I’m waving the white flag. I had to drop out of one other marathon and I don’t remember it being this painful but maybe I blacked it out. Maybe I care way more about this one. I have one in my back pocket but Chicago really meant so much to me 😭 I guess I’ll enter the lottery for next year and maybe Berlin, too. Protect your bodies and listen to them

Big boy running

I’m 29 years old, 255lbs, 6’1” tall and a former athlete (wrestling & judo) so while I’m heavy I still have endurance and strength. I’ve done a work up of walking + jogging for a month while going to the gym to train my legs which has been great. Problem is I’m getting shin splints and plantar fasciitis in my right foot now after every run (tempo runs, intervals for speed work, everything at a quicker pace than a slow jog). What can I do to remedy these issues? I don’t want to stop running and I am losing weight which I’m sure is a big reason as to why I’m getting these issues in the first place so, weight loss aside, what can I do right now to keep getting miles? Thanks, especially to my other big dawgs if you reply!

How bad is it? How am i even walking with this level of injury?

My MRI report is the following:

· There is evidence of a subacute complete mid portion patellar tendon tear, with granulation tissue at the tear site. No associated patella alta.

· There is associated tearing of the inferior portions of the medial and lateral patellar retinacula, related to the patellar tendon rupture, preferentially involving the medial patellar retinaculum.

· Complete mid substance anterior cruciate ligament tear with associated anterior tibial translation.

· Complete distal MCL tear, with findings suggestive of partial healing of the distal MCL fibers due to the pes anserine tendons. This ligament demonstrates mild laxity, concerning for continuing instability. No Stener's like lesion. There is an associated partially healed posterior oblique ligament injury.

· Posterolateral corner injury, with a grade 1 strain type injury of the lateral collateral ligament near its femoral attachment, grade 1 strain type injury of the popliteus muscle, arcuate ligament injury, and disruption of the popliteomeniscal fascicles. The main stabilizing posterolateral corner structures are still intact.

· Complete radial tear within the posterior horn lateral meniscus, with complex tearing and maceration of the adjacent meniscus. There is associated disruption of the popliteomeniscal fascicles. The peripheral extrusion of the body lateral meniscus suggests deficient lateral meniscal function.

· Low-grade partial tear involving the posterior cruciate ligament.

· Moderate joint effusion.

I still retain leg extension, and do long standing shifts without any pain. Its been 2.5months since the original injury. Isn't it a bit too late for the doctors to not notice?

I have plantar fasciitis and 8 weeks until Melbourne Marathon

I knew I would have to withdraw from a race at some point but I’m not sure if this is the one.

I’ve had on and off plantar fasciitis for years. This time I’ve been struggling with it for nearly 10 months. I did a 30km trail race and during the race I felt totally fine. By the afternoon I couldn’t weight bear, but the following day it felt fine.

Since then the past 3 weeks it’s been on and off, and the last time I had pain was Saturday. It’s been nearly a week and I’ve ran once (4km) and the other days I’ve been in the gym doing elliptical machine and stair stepper machine. I’ve had next to no pain since Sunday.

I went to my Chrio/ performance coach Wednesday who said Melbourne is over, and suggested to pull out. I’m still hopeful. I’m fit and know I can be fit enough in 8 weeks to run a marathon, it will be my 4th marathon and have also ran a 50km ultra in March. It’s just whether my foot will be ok.

I’m not looking for medical advice as I’m doing lots of rehab, physio exercises, wearing toe spacers and arch support (it all feels like it’s slowly working and seriously been working on everything this week).

Has anyone else experienced this dilemma before and if so what did you do? What would you recommend?

About 4 and a half months post surgery struggling with 2 mile run

Had my repair surgery for a bucket handle tear 4 and a half months ago. It took me about 3 months before I was able to fully return to soccer and thus far things have been going great. In fact I’ve been able to play through scrimmages with minimal pain in my knee. However I need to run a 14 minute 2 mile for tryouts and while I’ve been able to get to 15 minutes my times are incredibly inconsistent and a lot of the time I have to stop due to pain. Got about a little less than 2 weeks before tryouts. Does anyone have any tips?

What to do while recovering from femoral stress fracture?

I have an MRI scheduled for next Monday, but ortho think I have a femoral stress fracture. Actual injury acuteness (aka the first time it felt like I couldn’t keep pushing through it after some very mild aches) happened halfway through a half marathon. It’s been almost two weeks now and I still cannot bear weight on it unless I am just standing still, and if I have a lapse of judgement where I attempt a step without support it almost makes me lose my vision with pain, and hurts unbearably for an hour or two afterward.

Anyway, I’m guessing that it’s a longer road to recovery than just a few weeks of doing nothing, and I am looking for tips for how to stay active/mentally sound in the interim without the ability to put weight on my right leg.

Do I get one of those under the desk cycle things? I think I could do that very gently, but not sure if that even does anything at all. I could do weights from my chair. That’s pretty much all I can think of. I know people will suggest swimming but I honestly don’t know how I’d get in and out of the pool right now.

I know I could ask the ortho after the MRI but I’m eager to get a game plan as early as I can.

And yes, I’m beyond disappointed. I was halfway through marathon training for my first ever marathon and had felt so incredible until this issue, and I’m terrified of how long it’s going to take me out of the game. Fall running is my favorite, too. :(

Is it over?

I was training for a half marathon. Was in the middle of a 12 week plan. Took a break from running for about 10 days because I wasn't feeling good, felt a general body exhaustion, maybe a virus infection.

Also had some pain in my lower back before this, though think it's because i was running a lot on concrete.

Well, today when i went for a very easy run (7:40/km), i can say that my lower back pain is no more but , after 1-2km felt this pain in my right hip flexor (groin pull). It's nothing new, i had it before but maybe i had other things hurting more and i didn't give it much thought then. Tried adjusting my form, stepping different, increased my cadence, ran slower... When i lift my knee it's there even after the run. Read online it takes weeks to recover from this.

What do?

New sharp calve pain , veteran barefoot runner

I am having this sharp pain in my calve , lately on my left side. I am running in a humid hot climate and have done it for years , could be lack of sodium but it doesn’t seem like it. Usually 7/8 km per trail run 3 times per week same route more or less. It feels like a sharp pain i managed to run through it but lately i stop to walk feels like I am doing damage. It also doesn’t happen each run. When it does happen after the run I may actually limp and stays sore for a few days

Knee issue

Hi guys, wondering if anyone can help. Last year I had a minor niggle in my knee (achey knee cap - it didn’t cause an issue whilst running but would after). I went to physio about this and was given some exercises to loosen my gluteus medius and use a resistance band to do some stretches.

This worked for a while but I seem to be having some further issues. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve upped how much I’ve ran and starting to get pain again in my right knee cap. It’s a minor ache but something I need to sort as I’m hoping to run a marathon in a week and a half. I also feel like I’ve got a lot of pressure around my knee caps so wondering if anyone has any advice or stretches they can recommend

New and persistent arch pain

Sorry in advance for the long post! Beginner 25F runner here & have spent the last 6 months training for my first half marathon in 4 weeks. I’m trying to work out what I’ve done to my right foot because I’ve now had this pain for about 10 days and it doesn’t seem to be improving.

The pain is in the arch of my right foot only, underneath the navicular. I don’t have any of the classic signs of PF & I’m not feeling any pain elsewhere to support PTTD. It hurts when I run, walk, stand as the foot is flat. It also hurts to rotate the foot outwards but not in.
I don’t have pain when stood on my toes, but as the heel lowers back down I feel a sharp pain in the arch. There doesn’t seem to be any noticeable swelling or bruising either. My arches also have a ‘creaking’ sensation which is concerning me.
There’s no real tenderness when touching it, either.

A bit of background: I recently purchased a support shoe (ASICS GT-2000 14) to correct some pretty bad overpronation (more so on my left leg). Before this I was running in a simple and neutral shoe and was running around 25k a week. I swapped to the new shoe and ran about 18k in them before the pain started.

I’m wondering if the new shoes are a correlation or causation because the pain is apparent when I run/walk in other shoes.

I’ve been trying to rest it in the hope it’ll resolve itself but it doesn’t seem to be, but equally I have worked so hard to get to where I am and would be so, so upset if this is going to derail what I’ve been training for just 4 weeks out.

Has anyone had a similar injury that has any advice please? I will get the injury properly assessed but would like to be mentally prepared if it’s going to prevent me running next month.

Training & Injury?!

Hi everyone!
Firstly, I can’t wait to run with you all.
Second, this is my first marathon. I’m very competitive (especially with myself) and set a lofty goal for my first. I’ve had a few busy weeks, and am wondering, “did I even allot myself a rest day for the past three?”

I pulled off a speed workout this past Friday, and by my second to last interval my glute was KICKING! Now it’s Monday, I took the weekend off, but I am feeling discomfort around my glute medius and outer hip. Suspecting bursitis perhaps? But now I’m in freak out mode. We’re only 60 some days out. Do I rest, push through and continue with training, seek out help from my doc?

I’m freaking out about injury while marathon training. 🙁 Any experience in this?
