I have plantar fasciitis and 8 weeks until Melbourne Marathon

I knew I would have to withdraw from a race at some point but I’m not sure if this is the one.

I’ve had on and off plantar fasciitis for years. This time I’ve been struggling with it for nearly 10 months. I did a 30km trail race and during the race I felt totally fine. By the afternoon I couldn’t weight bear, but the following day it felt fine.

Since then the past 3 weeks it’s been on and off, and the last time I had pain was Saturday. It’s been nearly a week and I’ve ran once (4km) and the other days I’ve been in the gym doing elliptical machine and stair stepper machine. I’ve had next to no pain since Sunday.

I went to my Chrio/ performance coach Wednesday who said Melbourne is over, and suggested to pull out. I’m still hopeful. I’m fit and know I can be fit enough in 8 weeks to run a marathon, it will be my 4th marathon and have also ran a 50km ultra in March. It’s just whether my foot will be ok.

I’m not looking for medical advice as I’m doing lots of rehab, physio exercises, wearing toe spacers and arch support (it all feels like it’s slowly working and seriously been working on everything this week).

Has anyone else experienced this dilemma before and if so what did you do? What would you recommend?

I do a story podcast - tell your life story!

Hi there,

I wanted to reach out to this community as I'm currently doing a personal project, running my own podcast series. It's called 'The Life Interview: In Their Shoes'. It's an autobiography-style podcast aimed at everyday people, a chance to hear their lives in one conversation.

The topics I cover are childhood, ambitions, failures, struggles in life and the present day. It’s a chance for you to tell your story of your life essentially and I love listening to people’s stories.

If you or someone you know would be interested please send me a message.

Thanks in advance!
