Flowering Natives

Cream Violets (Viola striata), Virginia Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum), Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum), Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)

The first 3 I planted bare root a few years ago. The columbine just grows everywhere and keeps reseeding.

Northern Lights Daylilies

I just received my order from Northern Lights Daylilies. I have ordered well over a hundred plants from 5 different suppliers and these are by far the largest and nicest ones I have ever received. They also included several beautiful gift plants that matched my color palette.

Four years ago I planted 30 bare root Virginia Waterleaf. I was warned about how aggressive it is, but I’m trying to reclaim a wooded area infested with invasive plants, so aggressive natives are part of the strategy. I never saw more than a handful of them emerge in the intervening years and they were always tiny. Now I have this monster and it is thriving!

Zone 5a, Minnesota

I hope she’s happy here. I’m trying to establish a healthy, native understory and introduce a variety of plants. I’ve done a lot of seeding and planting bare root perennials, but this is my first big splurge.
