My Plan for Australia HSR

My Plan for Australia HSR

My Plan with all Stations

My Plan not showing Stations

A render from the HSRA (High Speed Rail Authority)

The closest thing we have to HSR now - the Queensland electric tilt train

The current first stages of the Australian Government's HSR plan

For many years now, Australian public transport lovers, governments and science agencies have all pushed for HSR.

Australia doesn't have HSR.

This is my plan that I have created, and it isn't perfect or even very accurate, it's just my best attempt at doing something that everyone wants.

The Route:

  • Adelaide Main Station
  • Adelaide Parklands Station
  • Mount Barker Station
  • Murray Bridge Station
  • Ballarat Station
  • Geelong Station
  • Werribee Station
  • Sunshine Station
  • Melbourne Southern Cross Station
  • Broadmeadows Station
  • Albury Station
  • Wagga-Wagga Station
  • (New) Canberra Station
  • Wollongong Station
  • Campbelltown Station
  • Bradfield/ WSI station
  • Parramatta Station
  • Sydney Central Station
  • Chatswood
  • Central Coast
  • Newcastle
  • Port Macquarie
  • Coffs Harbour
  • Gold Coast Airport
  • Surfers Paradise - Gold Coast
  • Beenleigh
  • Brisbane Roma Street

The route in total is about 3000km long (That's 539,604,316 M4 Carbine Barrels for all the americans out there) with 27 stops, which would take about 13 hours considering (an ambitious) 350km/h cruise speed. There wouldn't be many people riding the whole thing, as the major cities on the way would be places for people to get on and off.

Given that this is taking place in the angloshere, it'd probably cost a trillion dollars (but probably around 350 billion AUD), and would mostly run in highway medians, but meeting existing stations and dipping under or rising over the ground to get to convenient stations.

As for rolling stock, the Government would probably want locally assembled units, and single story alstom trainsets would probably be used, with compartments, premium class and standard class.

Fares would be about 50c per km for compartment users, 25c per km for premium class passengers and 15c per km for standard class.

This would be great for Australia to have, and anyone with suggestions please do suggest your suggested suggestions.

Trains in Canberra

I'm a former Canberran who now lives in Melbourne, and I've noticed how useful the intercity and regional trains are there, operated by V/ Line. In the past, when going to Sydney from Canberra, I've taken the train.

It's very easy to tell that the service is not designed to be the best possible, and as someone in public transport and urbanism circles, I've come up with several improvements for the service.

1: Integration better into Civic. Even though buses serve the station for when the trains arrive, the station is quite out of the way. As part of the proposed Australian HSR project, a new station would be built in Ainslie Avenue, and even though this is a megaproject that is likely to get cancelled, I believe that the station should be built for existing services. After passing through or stopping at the existing station, the line would be tunnelled under LBG and terminate at the Ainslie Avenue station. This location would give interchanges to light rail at Alinga Street and buses at city interchange, as well as just being in the city anyway.

2: Better Frequency. Between CBR and SYD, there are roughly 21 daily flights, and murrays operate coachbuses hourly. For reference, the current train services capture about 1% of demand. If services were operated hourly, or even half-hourly, probably using a peak/ off peak timetable, that would probably satisfy demand.

3: Speed Upgrades. Combined, I'm pretty sure that the ACT, NSW and federal government are spending a combined 200 million dollar upgrade on speed, which is a good start. Loops and unnesacerry curves will be short-cutted, and other upgrades. This is good, and it should happen, but I feel that what we really need are tilt trains. A trial in 1995 used tilt trains, achieving the journey in just 2 hours and 9 minutes, with no upgrades to existing infrastructure. Ordering new battery and pantograph tilt trains for the service would most likely produce this result. The slower services could still operate as stopping all stations services between the cities, but a direct express using tilt trains could stop at the new station, the old station, Queanbeyan, Goulburn, Campbelltown and Sydney.

4: Change of administration. It's not necesarrily in the interests of the NSW state government to run the service, except for the towns along the route. It is, however, in the interests of the territory government, due to traffic reductions, C02 emmission reductions and economic advantages of having good quality rail transport.

Overall, the service needs improvements and could be improved. This probably will not happen in today's political climate, but we can hope.

Oh, and by the way, there was another train operating out of Canberra. It went to Cooma and was called the Snowy express, just a nice little fact that I wanted to put in there.

Redesigning Melbourne's HORENDOUS tram stops and tram lanes!

The current Situation (Yes this is a tram stop - aparrently)

My New and Improved StopDesign

Here in Melbourne, we have many awful tram stops. This redesigned stop and tram lanes is my proposal on a way to fix this. The idea is car traffic (The Black lane) is completely separated from trams, making said trams faster and more convenient.

At stops, expanded platforms take space from the roadway, making it merge into the tram traffic in a "Keep Clear" zone.

This shouldn't be an issue, as it will only be at stops and because it is a designated keep clear zone, there shouldn't be queuing.

The design also takes space out of streetside parking for wider footpaths and a one - way bike lane on each side - and I've only done one half of the street, because MS paint is too painful to replicate the same design twice.

When not at stops, the tram glides through dedicated lanes, that would preferably have green tracks featuring Australian Native groundcovers, but if necesarry could just be a transit only lane, like if emergency response times needed increasing.

Ultimately, this redesign would deprioritise cars, increase active and public transportation quality and size, and just be much better than what is currently available.

BTW I only did half the street, and this drawing is not to scale or accurate, it's just my best try.

i hope that Melbourne can get better stops, so that the transit system can be bettered.
