COMPARISON: origins Rule of Rose PAL UK Factory sealed copies from 2006

Hello everyone!

As I’ve recently come across several attempts to “re-wrap” Italian “find” copies of Rule of Rose PAL UK using the factory shrink-wrap from another PS2 game with an original PlayStation tear strip, in order to increase their value and make them appear factory sealed, I decided to put together a small comparison.

Here you can see 4 of the 13 known genuine Factory Sealed PAL UK copies side by side.

Original Factory Sealed PAL UK copies are extremely rare and highly valuable.
The last public sale took place on eBay in 2024, where a UKG 90 graded copy sold for £2,999 (see the last photo).
………………..
As of today, only 13 Factory Sealed PAL UK copies have been known to circulate among collectors since 2006, although it is believed that a few more may still exist.

(I’m trying to track down and collect every single one of them, as this is the only PlayStation game whose story has been surrounded by so much discussion from its development right up to the present day.)

Take a close look at the small manufacturing defect, which is most visible on the back of the case: the PlayStation tear strip runs at a slight angle.

This production characteristic is identical on all 13 Factory Sealed copies, just like:
- the glue applied to every sealed edge in almost exactly the same way,
- the shrink-wrap stretched at the same angle,
the PlayStation tear strip positioned at exactly the same height, with the same starting and ending points.

All 13 copies that have been circulating since 2006 were factory sealed in an almost identical manner, differing only in tiny manufacturing variations.
Here you can see four of them.

The remaining nine copies are sealed in exactly the same way.

This clearly indicates that they all originated from the same production batch and the same sealing line, where they were sealed by the same automated factory process.

These particular Factory Sealed PAL UK copies entered circulation because they had been sent out by Sony UK to developers and industry contacts as promotional gifts shortly before the game’s planned release, as Rule of Rose was a PlayStation 2 exclusive title.

Out of these 13 known copies,
7 have been professionally graded so far.
Among them are the two highest grades achieved:
CGC 9.8 A+ Black Label
VGA 90+ Gold – Top Pop
