Her End - my design from an uncut rectangle arches

Her End – one uncut rectangle Arches 300gsm, painted with acrylics

This one comes with a story. My previous masks about my mom’s Alzheimer’s showed how I experienced the disease: my end. This time I tried to imagine what it was like to go through this at the end of her life, from her point of view. Some people think the mind and will are gone near the end, but I don’t believe that’s true. Her will was still there, emotions were still there and they were reactions to things happening around her and in her mind. Fear was the one she expressed most. Frustration and anger were other big ones. Knowing something is very wrong, wanting your old mind and life back. But your mind is fractured, your plans and dreams are gone, and you stop recognizing the world around you. You no longer know what’s going on but you want out. Instead, you end up alone in the dark, with an unrecognizable mind in an unrecognizable world.

I folded E.T. from one uncut square of paper

The paper was over 1m wenzhou, rice paper. It was colored with ecoline and glue was used for 'wet shaping' (which is really common now for super complex origami).

Frog wetfold

Design and fold by Steve De Clercq

Frog: one uncut square of thick John Gerard's cotton paper, colored with acrylic ink, leaf: one uncut rectangle of John Gerard's albaca paper.

Got some of Gerard's papers at the Bonn convention and boy am I in love with them. The thick paper he got especially for me from his home when I explained I usually use thick paper for wetfolding. The paper isn't really made for wettening much as it starts losing fibers quick but it holds water for a loooong time and it shapes so nicely.

Even when dry it keeps any shape you mold it into. It's like working with tissue foil but with a nice soft cloth feel. Absolutely in love with it.

The albaca paper is also amazing to work with.

The model is actually a rework of a frog I designed a while ago. Wasn't happy with the ratio's and tried for a long time to improve it by adjusting the base. Turns out I only needed to adjust the tilt of one fold to make it all come together. That's how minimalistic designs work I guess..
