Special Ed Positions Question

How hard is it to get a job as a special education teacher? I am open to working in Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and The Bronx. Pretty much any borough but Staten Island. I am only certified in sped and do not have an additional content area certification. I am open to working in an elementary or middle school. I know sped teachers are in demand, but I only have the sped certification and not any content area certification which I know would make you more marketable. Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

Guidance counselor

I am posting for a friend who does not have Reddit and had a question about becoming a guidance counselor in the DOE. Would it be hard to find a guidance counselor position if she was willing to work anywhere? I know how competitive these positions can be, but she would work anywhere.

Sped Job Outlook

Hello all. I hope you teachers are enjoying the start to your summers! I am currently completing my masters in special education (All Grades), and wanted to know what the job outlook is like for special education teachers in the DOE. I am really open to work in any borough but The Bronx and Staten Island once I graduate and obtain certification. I also have certification in childhood education from my bachelor’s degree, so I would be dually certified. Also, how hard is it for sped teachers in the DOE? I would like to work in an ICT setting. I am aware that there is going to be a lot of paperwork and dealing with different kinds of disabilities that students have. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

Higher Ed Masters and Job Opportunities

I am interested in pursuing a masters in Higher Education Administration and had a few questions before I actually fully consider going this route and applying to schools. They are listed here:

- What are my chances of finding a job upon graduation?

- Would the internship that is part of my program help me find a full-time job in the university that I am interning at?

- Should I complete the program online or in-person? I see most programs can be completed either in person or online, and am undecided on the best route that I should take if I pursue this masters.

Job Search - Special Ed

I am going to be finished with my masters in Special Education (All grades) come this Fall 2026. I will be working on completing the certification exam this summer and hope to pass so that I can start teaching once my program is over. I am also certified in childhood education from a bachelor’s degree. How hard will it be to find a job in the DOE after I graduate? I am open to teaching elementary or middle school. Also, how hard is it to teach in the DOE as a special education teacher? Is it mentally draining or manageable? I did my student teaching placements on Long Island so I am not so familiar with the DOE, but will be moving to Brooklyn this summer so I would like to teach in the DOE. Any insight would be great!

ENL teaching

I am interested in possibly pursuing a masters degree in TESOL, however am a bit undecided about doing so. Are ENL teachers really in demand? I see on the NYCDOE website that they are, however I thought most schools only have about 4-5 ENL teachers so I don’t really know how they are in demand. I have worked with students who have diverse backgrounds for many years and would like to pursue a masters in TESOL, but do not know if this would be the best route for me especially if they are not really in that much demand. Can some teachers please let me know what is the best route to take. I have a bachelors in English and American Literature, so I could also take the route for becoming an English teacher. I appreciate any advice!

Yonkers City SD and New Rochelle City SD

Have any of you teachers applied to any positions in the Yonkers City SD and/or New Rochelle City SD? I see that both districts have multiple vacancies and wanted to know how these districts are and if anyone is familiar with them. Is there high turnover or just a lot of students which means more teachers are needed?

English or Social Studies

earned my bachelor’s degree in English Literature, but I also have enough history credits to pursue a master’s degree in either English Education or Social Studies Education.

I’m trying to decide which path would provide the best career opportunities and job prospects, particularly in New York. I know that Social Studies is often considered a saturated certification area, but I haven’t heard as much about the job market for English teachers.

My goal is to work for the NYC Department of Education after completing my master’s degree and obtaining certification. I genuinely enjoy both English and history, so I would be happy teaching either subject.

For those who work in education or have experience with hiring trends, which certification area would you recommend and why? I’d appreciate any advice or insights.

Social Studies

Would I be able to find a job for this upcoming school year as a social studies teacher? I did not make an account yet to apply for jobs, but was just wondering on what my chances are. I am really open to working anywhere since I know my certification is saturated.

School Psychology

Sped teachers demand

I am a newly certified sped teacher for all grades, and have been looking for jobs in the DOE. I would prefer to work in either Manhattan, Queens, or the Downtown Brooklyn area. Would this be possible for a new teacher who does not have any teaching experience besides student teaching? I know the sped license is really in demand, so it shouldn’t be bad, but I would like to hear from teachers who already work in the DOE on what the demand is really like. Thanks.

Pay

I am going to be new to the DOE this coming Fall and was looking at the pay schedule. I am aware of the starting salary for teachers, however I did not realize until now how little the yearly pay raises are. Some years it could be less than $1,000 raise. This is extremely ridiculous especially for the cost it takes to live. Am I looking at the pay schedule wrong, or is this really the case? It seems like it would take more than 10 years just to reach $100,000.

Question regarding Master’s

I need suggestions from teachers who are in the same situation as me. I completed my bachelors degree from NYU in childhood education and special education in May 2025. I will need to complete my masters soon, and I want to know what schools offer a master degree in special education in which I do not need to student teach. All the programs that I am seeing indicate that I will need to student teach again. I just need to complete a masters online without any fieldwork in person. I am working full time right now, and really do not want to leave my job for this, even though if I really have to, then I guess I will. I prefer to get my masters from either a SUNY or CUNY. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Salary

I am interested in getting a job in the DOE come this Fall as a Special Education Teacher. I wanted to know how often your salary goes up from working. For example, if my starting salary is going to be $80,166, how much will it be my second year of working? Do teachers receive yearly raises or does it stay the same for a couple of years before actually going up?

Special Education Teaching

Is it hard to find a job as a special education teacher in an ICT setting? I am certified in Students with Disabilities, All grades and would prefer to teach in an ICT setting rather than self-contained. I understand that my assignment may change depending on the year, but just wanted to know for now what is in more demand - ICT or self-contained.

Social Studies

Hello all. I am posting this for a friend who does not have Reddit. She was wondering how the job search is in the NYC public school system for social studies teachers. She is only certified in Social Studies, 7-12 and does not hold any special ed or ENL certifications. She really is open to work anywhere. I know it is a saturated certification, but there must be some way she can get a job.

Literacy Certification

Can anyone explain to me what the point is in getting a masters in Literacy if there are no jobs in the DOE that someone can get with this certification? Not trying to be rude to anyone at all who holds this type of certification, I am just wondering what you can do with it. I get a lot of emails on getting extension certificates for literacy, however I don’t really know why if the DOE doesn’t offer it as an option to get a job.

ENL job difficulty

I begin my masters program this summer in TESOL and was wondering if it would be difficult to find a job specifically in Queens once I graduate (May 2027). I live close to Queens, so am hoping for something there. I am open to any neighborhood.

ENL

Are ENL positions hard to come by? I’m interested in getting an advanced certificate in TESOL, however I’m seeing different things on here that it may be hard to obtain a job if you are not bilingual. Can anyone tell me how difficult it is to get a job as an ENL teacher?
