Is it just me or are most of us not helped by medication?

I have had no luck and feel like I have seen many others say the same for drugs like gabapentin, pregabalin, cymbalta, amitriptyline etc. I may be extra salty about it because I had chronic migraines as a child and was put on a lot of the same medications with no relief.

Mine is idiopathic and it seems like my doctor thinks these meds are the only option but they have not worked.

SFN progression-seeking hope

I was diagnosed with SFN about 3 months ago which seems to be idiopathic, but I’m still waiting to do one last test. I have also been suffering from this for 4 years. As I understand it, there’s not really anything that can be done about the condition itself, just ways to numb the pain. I am really nervous about the progression of this condition since it seems like theres really nothing that can be done about it. Is this true? Are there many cases where it doesn’t get worse? I read some patient stories on the peripheral neuropathy foundation website and no offense to these people I hope they are okay, but they said they have to use wheelchairs or scooters now and it sent me down a bit of a spiral because their stories sounded a lot like my own. I am also struggling with the fact that there’s not a whole lot known about this condition and therefore not a lot of avenues for me to help myself.

Found what’s really causing the pain!

I had been struggling with foot pain for the last 4 years and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. It was constant and causing me to be practically disabled. I’ve done everything a person could do to get rid of the pain and nothing worked. I began to also get a burning pain along with the aching and stabbing pain. A few months ago I had a biopsy and it was confirmed that I have small fiber neuropathy which is the real reason why I am constantly in pain.

Small fiber neuropathy is often the burning nerve pain but can also be aching pain, stabbing pain and numbness most often starting in the feet and the hands. This pain can also spread throughout the body. The damage to small nerve fibers also affects the autonomic nervous systems which can cause difficulty in regulating heart rate, breathing, temperature and may cause dizziness and fatigue. So far I’ve been on a new medication for 2 weeks and my mobility has improved. Before I could only stand for about 10-15 minutes and now I am able to stand for around 45-50 minutes. I’m still working on understanding the condition, how I can help myself etc but it feels hopeful knowing the reason for the pain. The condition isn’t super well known but I wanted to share in case it helps someone!
