Arin should've been the new voice of Early Cuyler
I'm bouncing back and forth between Squidbillies and Game Grumps compilations, and Arin let out a "WHOO" that was nearly identical to the redneck squid. Anyways, that's what I got. How you doin'?
Building an Alpha Legion Army with a Twist: The ADHD Warp-Lost "Loyalists" (Budget 500pt Start)
I’m jumping into the hobby again, and after looking through the lore, I’ve decided to build an Alpha Legion army. But I wanted to do something a little different (and hilarious) with their theme, and I wanted to share the concept to see what you all think!
The Lore Concept: My warband was a standard, clean-armored Alpha Legion company during the Great Crusade. They took a quick shortcut through the Warp, got hit with a severe wave of collective hyper-fixations and side-quests, and accidentally popped out 10,000 years later in the modern 40k setting.
They completely missed the memo about the Horus Heresy. They have absolutely no idea it happened.
Because they have severe space-marine-grade ADHD, their current operating theory is that the entire galaxy is playing a massive, elaborate prank on them.
- When they fight Modern Loyalists: "Look at these gold-plated cathedrals on tracks. They’re praying to a corpse and covered in purity seals. They’ve clearly fallen to a weird warp cult. Fire at will."
- When they fight actual Chaos: "Okay, these guys are obviously mutated warp monsters. Standard compliance procedure: purge."
- The Conclusion: Everyone else is trying to trick them into believing the Imperium fell. They are the only sane, loyal ones left.
The Budget & Modeling Plan (Keeping it Clean): Since I want them to look strictly "loyalist" (no spikes, no mutations, pure uncorrupted imperial tech), I’m building them entirely out of the Horus Heresy plastic kits. It also happens to be a massive budget hack.
My starting 500-point list (using the CSM Deceptions Detachment rules) is built from just two core boxes and a character:
- Horus Heresy MkVI Tactical Box (20 Marines): Splitting this to make 10 basic Legionaries, 5 Chosen (modeled as elite veterans), and 5 Warp Talons (modeled as a jump-pack spec-ops team).
- Cataphractii Terminator Box: Building a 5-man squad of heavy walking fortresses loaded up with a massive Reaper Autocannon and flexible Combi-Weapons to act as my heavy fire support.
- A clean Imperial Captain/Praetor: To act as my "Chaos" Lord proxy.
How the ADHD translates to the tabletop rules:
- Pre-Game Redeployment: My Chosen squad didn't "tactically reposition." They just got hyper-fixated on a shiny piece of scrap metal on the left flank and completely abandoned their original post.
- The Chaos Lord's Free Stratagems: The commander suddenly gets a massive burst of executive function, notices a tiny flaw in the enemy's armor, and yells it over the comms for a sudden, flawless ambush.
- Warp Talons vanishing after a melee kill: They didn't tactically exfiltrate. They wiped out the enemy squad, completely forgot what the main objective was, noticed a weird energy signature three miles away, and ran off to look at it.
- The Cataphractii Big Guns: They are entirely in the zone, tuned out from the radio chatter, just enjoying the rhythmic, heavy thump-thump-thump of the autocannon.
For the paint job, I’m planning a clean, metallic teal using the silver undercoat + Akhelian Green contrast trick, but I might leave their squad markings completely unfinished or mismatched because they got bored halfway through painting their gear in the drop pod.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions for fun hobby details or custom objective markers to drive the narrative home? Hydra Dominatus (or whatever)!
Any playlists you have on repeat at the moment?
I have watched the 7th Guest episodes repeatedly for the last week or so. Don't know why, but sometimes I just get stuck watching a playthrough.
Has anyone else been really into a certain one lately?
