Hammock-ers: should you invest (weight, space, cost) in the quilt or the sleeping bag?

I just bought my first hammock. I'm sick of falling off my sleeping mat.

I usually hike and bike as light as possible. Obviously an outer quilt replaces the sleeping mat, but how does this change the demands on the warmth of the bag?

Given space and weight are at premium; which is more important; having a warm (and therefore probably heavier/bulkier) outer quilt, or a warmer sleeping bag?

I'm going to be just using this in the summer but obviously mountains can get a bit cold at night!

Also happy to hear any tips you have for first time hammockers!

Is it possible to get a charge 2 to work with modern (Android 16) phones? Or time to change brand?

I've owned several Fitbit Charge models over the years, and honestly the reliability has been really disappointing.

  • Two Charge 4s developed completely black screens after only a few months.
  • My Charge 5 suddenly went from ~1 week battery life to about 4 hours.
  • I also had a Charge 3, though I can't even remember exactly how it failed — just that it didn’t last long either.

Ironically, the only Fitbit that has consistently worked well for me has been the Charge 2. One eventually died after I landed on my wrist on pavement, but aside from that it’s probably been the most reliable wearable I’ve ever owned.

Unfortunately, I recently upgraded to a newer Android phone, and it refuses to recognise the Charge 2 at all. The phone still detects my Charge 4 and 5, but those are basically unusable for other reasons. From what I’ve read, this may be related to older Bluetooth protocols no longer playing nicely with modern phones. I’ve already tried every common fix I could find online: reinstalling the app, rebooting devices, clearing Bluetooth cache, etc.

At this point, I honestly just want:

* a small/simple tracker * decent sleep tracking * time + exercise tracking * limited notifications * good reliability

The Charge 2 was perfect for that.

A few questions for anyone who’s been through this:

  • Has anyone managed to get a Charge 2 working reliably with a modern Android phone?
  • Is this effectively the end of the line for the Charge 2?
  • Was the Charge 3 actually more reliable than the 4/5, or does it eventually suffer the same issues?
  • Will the Charge 3 also run into the same Bluetooth compatibility problems?
  • Are there any good alternatives that capture the same “simple watch/fitness band” feel but still have strong sleep tracking? (Garmin came closest for me, but the sleep tracking was pretty inaccurate.)

Would really appreciate any recommendations or experiences — thanks!

Been considering the Smashpot conversion for my DVO Onyx and would like some input on whether it might help with two specific issues I'm dealing with.

Arm pump issue: I had surgery on my left hand years ago and my index finger is basically decorative at this point. This means I get bad arm pump on the left side — and I want to stress this isn't regular arm pump, it's neurological/mechanical from the old surgery. My right hand is completely fine.

I've tried everything to manage it: OneUp bars, foam and gel grips, cockpit setup tweaks, physio. All helped to varying degrees. The biggest single upgrade was moving to the DVO Onyx — that 'coil-like' initial stroke made a noticeable difference. Given that experience, I have a feeling a coil conversion might take things further. Has anyone with sensitivity issues (injury-related or otherwise) found the Smashpot meaningfully smoother in the initial stroke compared to stock Onyx?

Air bleeder issue: The other thing I'm dealing with is needing to hit the air bleeders. I often don't notice the need to bleed until the fork starts firming up — and by that point, my arm pump has already kicked in and my left arm is toast for the rest of the day. My shop says air migrating between chambers after big days is normal, and the fork was serviced (TF tuned) only a couple of months ago.

What I'm wondering is: does the Smashpot eliminate the need to bleed air like this? My assumption is yes, since it's oil-based rather than air-based — but can air still find its way into places it shouldn't be in a Smashpot-converted fork?

Appreciate any experience from people who've made the switch, especially if you were coming from stock Onyx.
