Ran into a group of horses on public gravel road. Their leader was a gentleman…. Not.

I was out for a fun 4th of July MTB ride and I left from my house, which had about 5 miles of public road (3.5 mi being gravel) before getting to the trailhead.

Anyways, on my return from the trail I am back on the gravel road and have a mile or so left of gravel when I encounter a group of horseback riders. I’m on a decent, I know this trail/road and there is an outfitter that gives tourists a guide-led ride on this road. So I figure it’s one of them or maybe a family for a ride. I let the back of the group know I’m there, approach slowly and am on the opposite side of the road.

I’ve grown up in Montana and know horses, I spooked one a bit and said sorry , but the guide stops me a bit aggressively, he rides on and I’m like why isn’t he halting? I know a ride like this just needs the leader to stop and boom the rest would to.

Anyways, it’s all on the video, that’s how I felt when it happened. I was shook by this guy and I literally ran high school track exercises up this hill as a kid (I’m 36 now).

What do y’all think? Was I in the wrong? Should I talk to someone about this? There’s a local Facebook group I could always add it too.

Thanks y’all for your thoughts.

Happy fourth and happy riding!!!

Edit: wow this blew up!! Thanks for all your comments and feedback. Yes, I could have announced better, but on a road, not legally required.

I know the company this guy works for. I’m going to do the considerate thing and contact his employers and explain the situation. If they are willing to listen and reprimand him—okay. But if they ignore me or are just straight up rude, I think I’ll report the incident to the police and post on local Facebook pages.

Thanks again y’all.

Ride safe, have fun, and put out the positive vibes.

Anyone regret switching to an eMTB?

I’m seeing e-bikes everywhere and I'm seriously tempted.
I’m a huge mountain biker I love the climb just to bomb back down. But honestly, those long climbs drain so much energy that I'm wiped by the time I reach the fun downhill and technical sections. Does the bike lose its playful, snappy feel on technical trails?
I’ve been recommended the Tesway X9 Ultra recently, but I’d love some honest feedback. Do you have any regrets, or was switching the best decision you ever made?

EDIT: not an ai question I worked really hard on this post as I don’t post often I get severe social anxiety and put too much into it that’s my bad I’d appreciate some honest answers though.

Coil vs High End Air Shock

I have been riding a base model Rockshox Deluxe for about 8 years and it’s been okay I guess, but getting worse. I tried some friends bikes that have a coil and it was night and day how amazing the coil felt. I felt like the rear end wasn’t even there over bumps. My question is this: Does a coil act differently to a high end air shock (like a Vivid)? My only comparison ive felt is low end air to high end coil. Would I feel the same about a high end air shock and a coil?

Fork is bent. Have you guys ever ridden a bent fork?

My Boxxer is bent and the wheel sits a bit offset to the left. The fork compresses and rebounds normally and
Imo the wheel offset doesn’t affect the handling. It rides pretty normally tbh but I’m worried it might be a problem if I go to a bikepark or do some bigger jumps. The bike is currently in the shop and this is the only photo I have. What do you guys think? Share your experience if you have ever ridden a bent fork!

Tubeless tire pressures on older/vintage bikes

I have an old (20y) bike, and have run tubeless with Stans, since the start. That wasn't too long after people started converting regular rims to tubeless setups.

I recently looked up pressures as I setup my daughter's 27.5" bike as tubeless, and either I just got educated, or things changed over the years, in terms of pressures that are run in conversions. I've been running lower 30's, all along.

Did I miss it entirely for all these years, or has there been a shift towards running lower pressures since that time?

My setup is 26x2.3 tires with DT Swiss xr 4.1d rims (which are narrow and I seem to recall having some more bead locking issues). I just want to make sure there aren't safety issues in moving to lower pressures at this point.

Is this level of wear normal for FiveTen Freerides?

Bought my first set of flat pedals and MTB shoes last year (used to ride clipless). Pedals are RaceFace Chesters, and shoes are FiveTen Freerides. I weigh about 170 lbs FWIW.

After 1 year, with fairly moderate use (riding every other weekend or so, from about April until October last year... rest of the year it's frozen here), the soles of the shoes look like this. There's even an actual hole on one shoe:

https://preview.redd.it/vzwgtkgaymbh1.jpg?width=3818&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=129a7543b12f1712d3d9d818c15850949cf66853

Is this normal? The rest of the shoes look almost new, but the soles are a wreck.

Are there other brands with more durable soles?

Anyone else having luck with the 3 months free and $20 Audible credit?

I love Audible app for apple watch. They are now offering 3 free months + $20 Audible credit for their new Standard Plan. I've used their offers in the past, so I figured I'd be ineligible, but it actually worked. Did anyone else get it to work?

Has my EXT Storia V3 gone bad?

I bought this Storia V3 late last year. I rode about 100 hours and everything was fine. I could hear the oil whooshing around during compression and rebound and it kind of sounded nice. But right around 100 hours I started hearing this honking/kazooish noise you can hear in this video. It is audible during compression then gets louder during rebound. I already had is serviced at Suspension Syndicate but it is still making this same noise right after the service. I showed them this video and they said this sounds like a normal Storia V3 at bottom out. But since I rode this trail about 50 times this year before I ever heard this noise, it sure does not seem normal. Also, I get the same noise rough chunky stuff nowhere near bottom out. The tough thing is I cant recreate the noise by cycling the suspension on flat ground and they cant recreate it on their dyno.

I was hoping maybe someone has already chased down a similar noise with these and has a recommendation. I have already checked preload, mounting hardware etc. Thanks

Thule Epos 3 vagy Spinder Diamant FG3 Black Led

A cím egyértelmű.
Illetve ajánlást is alternatívákra.

Getting back into it and can't decide on Polygon Collosus T8 Alloy or Trek Fuel EX 8 Gen 7 Alloy. TLDR give me your recommendation on an All Mountain bike that is $4000 or less and why you would choose it over the 2 aforementioned bikes.

I'm looking to get back into trail riding after not doing it for around 8 years as a way to get back in shape and lose some weight. Currently sitting about 255lbs and will likely be a bit lighter by the time I actually get the bike. I'm by no means an elegant rider and was often standing heavy on the pedals. Part of the reason why I stopped riding is my 2018 Diamondback Atroz 1 was not built well with a straight steer tube(Fork compatibility nightmare) and rounded out crank arms from a square peg bottom bracket. I also did not have the money to completely rebuild the bike and now that I'm looking to get back into it I want something with more capability. If anyone has rebuilt one of these bikes and has a parts list or knows of any issues I would love to hear about it because I will probably rebuild it to keep as a spare bike.

Currently, I live in the Kansas City area which appears to have quite a few trails of varying difficulty. I would also like to make trips to Howler Bike Park in Branson as well as Oz Trails Bike Park in Bentonville after I have gotten some miles under my belt. Also like the idea of other trips to Colorado, Utah, etc.

I'm torn between these 2 bikes for the most part for a couple reasons that I will outline below. I have kicked around the idea of the Fuel EX 9 or Fuel MX 9(I like the idea of the 150/160 travel but carrying 2 different tubes would suck but I would get over it). Ideally I want to stay below $4000, but if the upgrades you get in the $5000 category are worth it such as Fox Factory and Eagle 90 to name the common ones I see then I'm not opposed to jumping up.

I have primarily been looking at alloy frames, Sram drivetrains and Fox suspension. I'm not opposed to Shimano drivetrains and Rock Shox suspension but Carbon Frames are a hard sell because of their cost and lack of durability (based on what I was reading 8 years ago which may not be the case now). My main thought process is buy once cry once that way I have a bike that will last for the better part of a decade if all goes well

Trek Fuel EX 8 Gen 7:

  1. 2 local trek stores for parts, service and in depth maintenance (Large reason to go with trek over others)

  2. Reviews all seem positive

  3. Big Brand support

Polygon Collosus T8

  1. The price of $3000 from BikesOnline right now is hard to disregard

  2. Fox 36 Performance which seems to be an upgrade over the Fox 36 Rhythm. Any input or info on this distinction would be appreciated.

Other bikes I had on my list are Ibis Ripmo AF, and Orbea Occam LT. Mostly ruled them out because there wasn't a store near me that carried them.

Worth upgrading '09 Rocky Mountain Slayer SXC 30

Hey! I appreciate any suggestions.

I got the bike about 16 years ago. I bought it as just the frame and built it up myself and don't have any issues doing upgrades. I am just not sure if it's worth it at this point. I have Shimano deore xt 2x10 drivetrain and brakes on it. Though bikes now appear to use 1x12.

Is it worth upgrading an old bike with 26" wheels and old geometry? Or should I put that money towards a newer bike, been interested in something like a YT Jeffsy for a while now. Are newer bikes noticably better?

My riding was nothing special but I want to get back into biking and push myself to progress. I will mostly be riding in and around Connecticut single track.

I appreciate anyone's insight into this.

A bit of a story

Started riding about 2.5 years ago and became religious about it. Season pass at Highland and I went maybe 3-4 times each week, all day. Started with a Bronson. Throughly enjoyed free ride and flow style trails. I enjoy technical but it’s like an IPA, every once in a while. I eventually went all in and had a beautiful Commencal FRS park edition. Unfortunately life hit me very very hard and I had to sell it for protect my life. MTB is the number one thing for myself mental health wise and it’s been almost a year since I had ridden. Short story is divorce is nuclear on your life no matter how good or bad it is. I’ve been working so hard the last few months to rebuild my life and I don’t have very much to work with but I miss riding so so much. I don’t have much of a budget either close to $2000 but that’s what got me my first Bronson. For me to get the $2k I have now was and is very very difficult as opposed to when I could afford my commencal. That being said it limits you. I do however have two contenders after doing some searching.

A 2022 Fury GT, was a demo bike at whistler and has had full tune up recently and in fairly good shape, but a little over budget. Has a few upgrades but for the budget I think it’s a strong option. I’m worried about this being more of a charging/plow race style bike for tech rather than flow

The other option I found was a 2019 Scott Voltage that is essentially brand new. It’s been ridden 10 hours this year with a fresh brake bleed, and I would just service the suspension on my end regardless, but it’s mint. I was under the impression this would be way more appropriate for my style of riding. This one is a few hundred under budget too, so a service alongside still fits my budget.

For perspective Helion and Cats Paw are my all time favorite trails.

At the end of the day with my life circumstances I’m lucky to even be thinking about buying a bike right now but in desperate to get out there this year. Next year I still plan on buying a FRS again.

Cross compatibility with rotors and calipers

Hey everyone, I just have a simple question. Can I run different brand rotors with different brake calipers?
I have Hope E4 calipers and wondered whether I could fit Shimano XT rotors on it. Does anyone have any experience with this?
