People can hide their lie with truth. A lie is a lie even if they mix in a bunch of truth in it. This can work in opposite as well. People can hide their truth with lie. Many character in this anime uses this concept to deceive people they love or hate. This is also how propaganda work.
What's funny is that the bits of truth will always contradict with the lie. At least this is what I realize when watching this anime.
Example : Historian claim there are no humanity outside the wall but how is it possible historian knows there are no humanity if the scout can barely explore the outside world? This is how Erwin realize something just doesn't sound right but no one cares if the truth contradict with the lie.
You might think this is just some silly anime logic but this also work in real life. Not sure is it safe to disclose in reddit thou....
