Fireplace re-finishing

Room walls and skirting boards are going white.

Sanded all the paint off the fireplace wood. Need some recommendations for products to re-finish it.

- would you stain, varnish, or oil the wood?

- patch the missing mortar and clean it all with something? Or remortar whole thing?

- find a couple of stones to fill the gaps on the base, and mortar them in? Wash stones with something?

What would you do with this?

Painting walls low sheen warm white. Painting skirting semi-gloss white.

Will have mid-grey carpet.

I want to paint it white but my wife wants me to keep it natural so I've sanded it to buggery.

What should I do with it to finish it?

Bought crappy old house, in process of making it less crappy before we move in.

The lovely textured ceiling has yellowed and the room is stinky. I removed a cabinet off of the roof and you can see how bad the yellowing is.

I'm not sure how to describe the smell. I don't think it is from smoking, probably more so decades of cooking without any ventilation (and total lack of interest in ones living environment.)

What am I best to do to deal with this before painting it? Is that textured crap likely to have asbestos in it?
