I built a pergola and I’m unsure if I needed to get consent

Hi guys,

I’ve recently bought a new home, and ripped out the old, sorry excuse for pergola (it was made of 2x4s , half rotten and nailed to the fence).

I’m considering putting a spa underneath the left-most bay, outdoor seating and bbq closer to the right near the house. Staining as well, maybe in the summer when the wood has fully dried out.

I’m also considering putting a polycarb roof on, with guttering running down the back and side, emptying out onto the existing roof gutter. But I understand there may be consent issues if I put a roof on, is the council likely to just randomly pop by and inspect it, and ask me to take it down?

Double Glazing Question

Anyone here who has gone through upgrading windows on their property from single glazed to double recently able to comment on their first hand experience once the new windows were installed?

I’d rather hear from others versus a companies “testimonials” & benefits

Was the difference in heat retention noticeably better with less “cold chills” + noise substantially quieter ? Any regrets or things you’d do differently ? I’m all ears.

Mods please rectify this incorrectly flagged post

You have blocked this post incorrectly, yes a person should get a licensed trades person in to conduct plumbing works if they are altering pipe work etc.

As a home owner you can undertake small tasks which are repairing washers inside taps and valves or replacing the valve/ tap like for like.

This post is about a basic issue inside a toilet cistern. It has serviceable parts using washer kits or simple direct replacements. They are asking about what specific part they need.

How to preserve vintage guttering?

I have fragile plastic guttering I’d like you to nurse along for a bit. Suggestions on how to clean gutters without clambering up on the roof? I use a Rhino ladder leaning against the house and haven’t found a stand which will hold the ladder away from the house. Grateful for suggestions.

Are gutterless roofs allowed in New Zealand's building code?

Sorry bit of a lame question. Claude hasn't been able to help super well.

Question is as per title really.

We are thinking about a monopitch build with quite wide eaves and live in Central Otago, so one of the drier regions in the country. Our thinking was it might be nice to use a french drain beneath the one edge of the roof for the occasional times we do get rain.

I can't see much about if this is legal in New Zealand other than constant mentions that make an assumption when you're building, you're adding gutters.

Feel free to tell me why it's a bad idea too if you want.

Do I need consent for removing a gas fireplace?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding a gas fireplace in my Christchurch home. The house was built in the 1960s, and the existing fireplace was never consented. We haven’t used it since buying the place (6 years already), and it’s fixed to the wall.

If we want to remove it, do we need any kind of building or gas consent, or can we just take it out ourselves? I just want to make sure we do everything by the book.

Thanks in advance for any guidance!

Repair scratched deck

I had someone accidentally scratch up my deck, looking for the best way to repair it.

We have about 80m² between one large, one medium and two smaller decked areas. The timber is purple heart and we use the Cutek system for oiling. There are about 30-40 scratches ranging from "meh" to "wtf".

What would be the best approach to returning it to near perfect:

A) Sand the entire deck
B) Sand the full lengths of effected planks
C) Feather sand only the scratched areas
D) Something else

Thinking I can't do this until closer to summer as oiling in winter makes it infinitely harder.

Also with regard to sanding, how would you approach this? Carefully by hand or use an orbital sander?

What would you experienced punters do?

Prefab homes and granny flats

Hi all,

I'm looking at a property where I would like to add two buildings. I live in the Manawatū where there seems to be lots of prefab homes companies. Prefab seems like an affordable option that is faster than traditional building - does this seem right or am I way off the mark?

One building would be a prefab granny flat (under 70m2). This is on a flat piece of section that just needs some scrub bush cleared. Good road access. This would go on the property first.

The other would be a prefab 3 bedroom prefab home. This would be on a flat section up a driveway. The driveway goes up a bit of a hill with some scrub bush around it. This was used as access for another house built on the neighbouring section.

There are houses further down this street so connection to utilities should be straight forward. The area is residential. The buildings would not take up more than 50% of the land area.

I'm very early on in this process and would love to hear from people who know more in this space.

Are prefab homes actually rubbish?

Are there things that I absolutely need to consider in this space that may not be obvious?

Any companies that you recommend or don't?

Where there lots of hidden costs?

Flashing ideas?

Whats kinda flashing profile would you go with here? I was thinking of also using a hardies board for the bottom weatherboard, just would be cool to have a flashing to protect the framing.

I’m nervous something sinister is lying behind the weatherboards, so it’s probably a can full of worms incoming..

Help with shower leak

I’m at a loss!
We have a leak in the corner where the shower glass meets the wall.

It had been leaking slowly and was behind a rubbish bin so ended up damaging the gib.
I ripped out the wet gib and old silicone, and then left it open for a few days to check for leaks.
No leaks! (Or so I thought)
After using filler and letting that dry, and then painting a primer coat, tonight i see it is wet…
I cant for the life of me think of where this water could be coming from.

Any suggestions? There is no silicone on the glass wall or door on the inside, but the other walls have new silicone.

Im wondering if water may be leaking down behind the mixer. Hope not.
I could use some advice please

Fence staining with a sprayer – any tips?

Hi everyone, planning to stain about 25m of fence and just wondering if this sprayer will do the job or if it’s more for paint only? Never done it before — do I need to back brush after spraying? Any tips appreciated. Cheers.

What would you do with this?

Painting walls low sheen warm white. Painting skirting semi-gloss white.

Will have mid-grey carpet.

I want to paint it white but my wife wants me to keep it natural so I've sanded it to buggery.

What should I do with it to finish it?

how bad would it be to block windows with shelves?

Hi I'm wanting to add storage to my office/spare room but 1/3 of the room is windows.
How bad would it be to cover the windows with shelves? I assume it would cause moisture and mold issues?

Basically this, red being the windows:

https://preview.redd.it/msavb4xboz1h1.png?width=1159&format=png&auto=webp&s=3866468bac83eec9e1cbdc3d0338b3f326aa94e3

If I was to do it, what would be the best solution for the windows to stop moisture/mold issues?

Remove liquid stain from unfinished plywood?

I have a relatively new plywood furniture set in my kid’s bedroom. Last night he had an accident just before bedtime, and dribbled some wee on the stairs. I sprinkled baking soda on it, but still woke up to this ugly stain this morning. Is there anything that can be done to minimize it?

You can also see he felt the need to take a pen to each of the stairs (labeled “S” for “stairs”…I guess in case he forgot what they were??). I assume those are there for good barring a total paint job, but I’d take any suggestions for that, too!

Where to buy a flush ceiling light fitting that takes bulbs? Are bulbs dead now?

I need to change some light fittings, and i cant for the life of me find any decent ceiling light fittings that takes light bulbs. Everything is built in LED!

For many reasons, i dont want built in LED

  • if anything happens, i need to buy another one - and will likely not be able to match the look
  • want to be able to make it brighter, dimmer, adjust color temperature if i dont like the default (i can buy bulbs to match my taste)
  • optionally smart - i can buy smart bulbs etc if i want it smart, or use dumb bulbs if i want ti dumb.

My main requirement is that its fairly flush on the ceiling (not ones that hang down), and looks decent without having to sell a kidney.

I looked everywhere i can think of, some shops have one or two at best - they either sound really shit (in terms of reviews), or looks really shit.

Any idea where one can find a decent light fitting that takes bulbs? Or is this one of those lost technologies now?

EDIT: clarifying some of the confusion. When i say Bulbs, i actually mean LED Bulbs (like E27 bulbs) - i hate that LEDS now come fixed to the fitting rather than allowing us to put our own LED bulbs. Secondly, i dont mean downlights, i mean light fittings like this where light is nicely diffused and the bulb is not directly visible (not that these are any good, but as an example): https://www.ikea.com/nz/en/p/kaerrnocka-ceiling-lamp-white-20599465/

Ideas for easier access to water tank

We've got an old concrete water tank collecting rain water (it was the water supply pre there being a mains supply back in the 60s/70s), see picture.

We often use this water for watering the garden, hosing down the car etc, the only problem being it's only accessible via a heavy concrete hatch. To date we leave the hatch pried open and drop a submersible pump in as needed, but ideally we want to close it when not in use.

Looking for suggestions as to how to do this without having to move the (heavy!) concrete hatch every time, while still wanting whatever we replace it with to be strong enough to walk over.

Any ideas/advice always appreciated!

IKEA Pax for laundry

Has anyone used the ikea pax wardrobe system to create laundry cabinetry? We’re FHB and our new home is a little light on storage in terms of cupboard space but our laundry is a bare empty room apart from the wash sink in one corner. Keen to keep budget low for this!
