London Heatwave vs Melbourne Heatwave

Here is a comparison between a Melbourne heatwave and a London heatwave. People in Melbourne might say 'it is only 35, we get 40+ here.' While that may be true, the dew points (humidity) can be much higher in London. At the peak of the heatwave on January 24th 2026, Melbourne was 41 degrees, with a dew point of 6. This air is dry, and feeling cooler, as it accelerates heat loss from your skin (rapid moisture evaporation). In London, it was 36 degrees, with a dew point of 22. This air is much more 'moist', preventing heat loss via evaporation. In fact, the lowest dew point was 15.9, with an average humidity of 74%! In Melbourne, the dew point stayed below 12.1 all day, with a lower average humidity of 43%.

The Kestrel Heat Index had temperatures feeling like 49 degrees in London, while Melbourne Kestrel Heat Index was around 39 degrees.

So, I would argue a 35 degree day with a dew point of 22 is much warmer 'feeling' then a 41 degree day with a dew point of 6 degrees.

Stay cool out there!
