1st Image: Earl's Court Farm in the 1860s. It's difficult to imagine today, but Earl's Court Underground station takes its name from a farm that once occupied the site. Earl's Court Farm remained in operation until the arrival of the District Railway transformed the area.

By the time this photograph was taken, urban development was already creeping south from Kensington High Street, although the farm workers appear completely unfazed by the changing landscape around them.

The Manor House and Earl's Court Farm were demolished in the mid-1860s to make way for the first Earl's Court station. Within little more than a decade, the surrounding fields had disappeared beneath streets, houses and railway infrastructure. The last remaining traces of the farm were finally cleared in October 1878, marking the end of centuries of rural life on the site.
