Rogue Trader - Does it get better after chapter 1? [Chapter 2 Spoiler]
I enjoy CRPGs from time to time. Big fan of POE1 & 2, BG3 and I've extensively enjoyed turn-based games such as XCOM. I am also deep into Warhammer 40k right now. Literally half through Eisenhorn which is basically Rogue Trader in different clothing. So it was the perfect choice for me.
But Rogue Trader just isn't a fun game. The lack of talent in this game astounds me. The presentation and depth in the character design had me hooked and I've played nothing else for days. However the facade quickly fell because
- The game is basically broken is many ways. Line of sight doesn't work well. Abilities are unintuitive and unpredictable, reading online half the abilities seem bugged.
- The combat itself is not terrible but it's hardly good either. There's no verticality to speak of removes a huge dimension of this type of combat. The AI is terrible and seems to have no consistent logic in its decision making. Despite playing on unfair I'm basically cruising.
- The fights are repetitive af. I get that I am going to fight heretics. But I've spent more than 10 hours playing this game and all the fights are the same. To make it all so much worse I'm never allowed to approach a fight in any different way. I'm not even allowed to try and set up an ambush or secure a certain terrain prior to combat.
- The game is basically on rails. I mean yes, it's act 1 but everything so far has been scripted with no alternative outcome. I'm not even allowed to immediately kill someone I clearly know is lying. The world has yet to open up in any considerate way. I just arrived on that space station in chapter 2 and I'm just running around holding tab, looting shit. There's not even trading to be enjoyed, it's just sell the cargo you have and hope you get enough influence to pick up everything.
- I read some people thought the story, or atleast companion story, was better than BG3. But so far there's been like zero interesting content at all. I arrive to a place. There is fighting. I meet companion. They join me. I encounter new place, there is fighting. A big conspiracy is unveiled on Rykad but there's no plot, no mystery, no stakes at all. It's just "here's a cultist conspiracy, oh you killed everyone good.. syke, here's a chaos marine... okay now you killed everyone"
The character and class design seemed really nice early on and it seems you can really change each class to be meele, ranged, and excel at different things but my points about fights kind of sucks the fun out of it. Not to mention the actually process of leveling has taken something that before was the most enjoyable aspect of these kind of games and made it tedious. 7 companions and I level up like once every 20-30 minutes. Also I've had zero interesting loot so far. Despite this, I somehow think I will still enjoy the game the further on I go but the beginning of chapter 2 just made me rage quit.
Does it get better? The bugs are here to stay, I accept that. Are there more unique fights? I understand there's tons of filler fights but if there's atleast some big tactical battles that force me to actually take decisions? Also does the story pick up more lengthy stories or is it the same as chapter 1. Does the game give more player agency to me later on?
I was planning on playing Wrath of the righteous after but I gather that game is basically suffering from the same issues.. And yet some people praise both these games above BG3 which makes me, even taking personal taste into account, want to dive deep into both. The more serious approach to the story and the more complex character builds are just wins in my book but if the game forces me to begin every fight from the same position against the same shit then what's the point.
