Disability in my Redesigns

Happy Disability Pride Month! I wanted to show and explain the redesigns I created—and the disabilities involved—once again. I’m no expert, but I aim to represent these experiences with love and respect. Ayano has a brain injury that prevents her from processing and expressing emotions normally. Oki is blind in his left eye. Megumi uses a cane, as she is a bone cancer survivor. Hanako is deaf in her right ear. I’d love to hear your thoughts and any suggestions you might have for when I redesign more characters. Thanks!

Rewrite Ayano & Taro (English tetx bellow ⬇️)

Thank you all so much for the warm reception my redesigns received! Here are the rewrites as well! I’d love to hear your thoughts and any questions you might have!

(All was made with Google traslator, sorry for the bad English)

•Ayano Aishi, 16 years old, she/her, demisexual, class 2-1, crush on Taro Yamada, obsessive personality, no club, reputation 0

Ayano is the daughter of Ryoba Aishi and Jokichi Yudasei; she was born on April 2, 2000. Her early childhood was peaceful and normal until, at the age of five, she was struck by a drunk driver while returning from playing at the park across from her home. The accident caused a traumatic brain injury to her frontal lobe; after spending a month and a half in a coma, she eventually woke up and recovered. Over the following months, her father began to notice her lack of facial expression and her apathy toward everything—even things she had previously enjoyed—as it turned out Ayano had lost the ability to identify and express emotions. Faced with this situation, her parents adopted two very different approaches: Jokichi desperately sought a cure for her condition, longing for his daughter to return to normal, while Ryoba—feeling guilty about the incident—prioritized her physical recovery, viewing her apathy as a relatively minor consequence that would simply resolve with time.

Ayano's situation led to constant arguments and disagreements between her parents; the accident had forced her to study at home for years, limiting her social interaction. She felt immense pressure from her father to return to "normal," while experiencing an emotional absence from her mother—even though her mother was the one actually present in the home. Medical treatments, therapies, and medication helped Ayano experience mild emotions, albeit briefly. However, her father was dissatisfied with her slow progress; fed up with both his wife and daughter, he abandoned the family when Ayano was eleven. This deeply affected her, causing her to develop a fear of abandonment and driving her to seek ways to "regain" her emotions through more extreme means. Ayano began spending a great deal of time alone, as her mother was working to support them. She used this time to seek out all manner of disturbing content—gore, pornography, hentai, true crime, and the like—hoping to trigger some sort of reaction, but ultimately, she simply became desensitized to and normalized such material.

At age 12, Ayano was able to stop homeschooling and enter junior high. Although the first year was difficult and she kept a very low profile, by the following year she had grasped how kids her age behaved; she began imitating that behavior to conceal her condition. She befriended Midori Gurin and Kuu Dere there, though she rarely shared much about herself—or simply lied. When she turned 15, she transferred to Akademi High, a higher-quality school, though far from elite. During her first year there, she met Taro, who was a year ahead of her. Thanks to a silly joke he made, Ayano managed to laugh genuinely for the first time in years. From then on, she slowly began to abandon her feigned interests to focus entirely on him. She could speak to him, but only for a few minutes a day, fearing she might scare him off; nevertheless, she knew everything about him. She would secretly take photos of him, steal his belongings, feign surprise when he told her things she already knew, and leave anonymous letters and gifts to express her love in some way. By the following year, her obsession had intensified significantly; the game truly began when she came to believe that Taro might be in love with someone else.

•Random fact: Her body is so cold that she always wear a sweater, even in spring or summer.

•Taro Yamada, 17 years old, he/him, bisexual, class 3-1, crush on ????, kind personality, art club, reputation +20

Born on May 13, 1999, as the eldest child in his family, Taro was raised with love and attention. From a young age, he displayed an introverted nature; while he enjoyed talking, he could never bring himself to initiate a conversation. This made it difficult for him to make friends, as he wouldn't approach anyone on his own. His first school friend was Osana—a demanding and complaining girl—yet Taro valued their friendship; during elementary school, he would even do some of her assignments whenever she asked, right up until the teachers found out. He deeply appreciates those who take the initiative to speak to him, becoming a very loyal and accommodating person; he would rarely refuse a request for a favor, even if doing so worked to his own detriment. Taro has been drawing ever since he first learned to hold a pencil. Although his parents initially viewed it as merely a cute hobby, he soon discovered a genuine passion for illustration—one he never let go of, despite his parents' objections.

Taro’s parents do not accept his idea of pursuing art professionally; although they do this thinking it will help secure a better future for him, in reality, they only cause him to drift further away. He joined the art club last year but never told his parents, instead claiming the extra time at school was spent studying. His clubmates, his sister, Osana, and Ayano, all know about his situation with his parents and help him however they can, even though he knows he will eventually have to tell them the truth when he wants to go to university. It is common for his clumsy remarks to unintentionally make people laugh, but ever since he spoke with Ayano, he has noticed she is acting somewhat strangely; he feels he must have scared her off and feels embarrassed whenever he recalls that conversation.

▲ 19 r/Osana

If you could rearrange the order of the rivals, how would you order them?

Personally, since Osana is Taro's childhood best friend and always has Raibaru with her, I feel she should be ranked higher than some rivals he's only known for a week (like Amai, Kizana, or Oka). On the other hand, some rivals should be ranked higher due to their strength (like Asu) or popularity (like Kizana).

What do you all think?
