I was bored, lmao

I got bored and decided to draw this, not my best attempt or style to draw in, but at least it looks relatively decent (and yes, that’s genderbend Death). I’ll probably go to hell for that drawing, but hey, it was funny

As the title suggests, today we will be analyzing the character designs from RoR. Starting this essay is none other than the King of All Beginnings, Qin Shi Huang!

Perhaps we should start with the obvious: his robe. It is actually a female-style robe, as garments with such motifs and cuts were most often worn by Chinese Empresses—even though this one is stylized to fit the unique fashion of the series. It is also worth noting the colors of the robe. During the Qin Dynasty, the historical Qin was often depicted in robes of similar colors, or combinations of yellow and red. This is quite fitting: yellow represents imperial authority and is generally associated with the Yellow Emperor, while red symbolizes luck and happiness. This ironically suits Qin quite well, considering how unlucky he actually was.

It is also worth noting that the robe features a dragon, which is a symbol of luck and imperial power and was frequently used in embroidery. The clouds accompanying the dragon are also significant; they are symbols of the will of Heaven and are linked to immortals. There is a legend stating that clouds protected the Chinese Emperor because he was considered the "Son of Heaven." Furthermore, there is the term "祥雲" (xiángyún), meaning "auspicious clouds," which serves as a synonym for good fortune.
We shouldn't forget the cutout in the shape of a cloud at his midriff. Why specifically the navel? In Taoism, the navel area is considered one of the energy centers of Qi, specifically the Lower Dantian, which is sometimes described as the "root of the tree of life." This fits our Emperor perfectly, considering his combat abilities.

As for the top itself, it is obvious that bare shoulders and an exposed back are not characteristic of Asian nobility, who typically sought to cloak themselves in as much expensive fabric as possible. However, knowing Qin's personality, he could be showing his confidence and asserting that he sets his own rules, as such cutouts would have been considered incredibly bold for his time.

Looking further down, you can see a portion of armor beneath the fabric that resembles the lamellar armor used at the time—the same type worn by the soldiers of the legendary Terracotta Army. Although the armor is partially stylized, at first glance it also resembles dragon scales.

If we finally shift our focus to Qin's hands, we notice one of the most striking details of his design: the huzhi, or protective nail guards. These were primarily used to protect the fingernails, as long nails signaled that a person did not need to perform manual labor, a hallmark of the upper class. If you look closely, the guards are also decorated with dragons, as well as floral motifs. While I couldn't identify the specific plant, I suspect they vaguely resemble orchids, which are associated with masculine virtue in Chinese tradition—though that is just a guess.

Among the smaller details, there is a subtle reference to a Chinese toggle clasp on the gold collar button, as well as a red earring with a knot that resembles the "Mystic Knot" (Pan Chang), often associated with a cycle of life that has no beginning and no end.

Now, we can discuss Qin's tattoo. In Chinese culture, the centipede is considered a symbol of longevity, healing, and the immortality that his historical counterpart sought through elixirs. Therefore, one can safely interpret this as a reflection of his historical self's obsession.
There is one small detail regarding his footwear: the patterns are exactly the same as Chun Yan's. While the shoes themselves are not identical to hers, these patterns were frequently used on clothing in that era.

Finally, we can touch upon his blindfold. While it may not have direct cultural references, it makes perfect sense in the context of his backstory; as you may have noticed, it features a pattern from Chun Yan's clothing. We all remember how close she was to Qin, to the point that he wears this blindfold even after her death.

In conclusion, I can say that the character design is undoubtedly excellent and very memorable, even if everyone has different tastes and preferences. Nevertheless, the design performs its function well and effectively tells the viewer exactly who this character is.

Как видно из названия, сегодня мы будем разбирать дизайны персонажей повести и смотреть на то, насколько в целом персонаж ощущается дизайном и эту рубрику открывает никто иной как сам Великий Император, Цинь Шихуанди!

Пожалуй, можно начать с очевидного в лице его халата, которая на самом деле является женской халатом ибо халаты с такими мотивами и кроя чаще всего носили Китайские Императрицы, пусть и халат был был стилизован под необычную моду Повести. Стоит так же обратить внимание на цвета самого халата. Во времена династии Цинь, саму историческую личность Циня часто изображали в халатах того же цвета или же желтое с красным (или похожими цветами), что в целом как раз таки и подходит, ибо желтый это - императорская власть и в целом ассоциируется с Хуанди, красный же обозначает удачу и счастье. Что в целом подходит под Циня, учитывая то каким неиронично неудачливым он был.

Стоит так же отметить то на самом халате изображен дракон, что так же считается символом удачи и императорской власти, а потому их часто вышивали. К этому относятся и облака сопровождающие дракона на самом халате, ибо они уже являются символом и волей Небес, так и связанно с бессмертными. Так же имеется легенда, где говорится что облака защищали китайского императора, потому что его считали сыном Неба.

К тому же, есть такое словосочетание как «祥雲» (xiángyún, сян юнь), означающее «благовещие облака», что является синонимом символа удачи.

Так же не забываем что у Циня на топе в области пупка находится вырез в виде облака. К слову, почему именно пупок? В целом, думаю это можно связать с тем что пупок в даосизме является одним из энергетических центров Ци, а если точнее то Ся дантянь, который иногда описывают как «корень древа жизни». Что в целом очень подходит нашему Императору учитывая его боевые способности.

Что же до самого топа, то вполне очевидно что открытые плечи и спина не присущи азиатской знати, что наоборот, пыталась облачиться в большее количество дорогих тканей. Хотя зная характер Циня, он вполне мог таким образом показать свою уверенность и то что сам себе устанавливает правила, ибо такие вырезы могли бы считаться очень дерзкими в его время.

Если смотреть ниже, то можно заметить часть брони под тканью, которая напоминает ламеллярные доспехи использовавшиеся в то время и даже были в качестве брони солдат легендарной «Терракотовой Армии». Пусть и сама броня частично стилизована и на первый взгляд больше напоминает драконью чешую.

Если же наконец-то сместить фокус на руки самого Циня, можно заметить одну из самых выделяющихся деталей его дизайна, Хучжи, они же защитные футляры напальчники. В основном такие использовались чтобы защитить ногти, так как длинные ногти могли означать то что человеку не нужно заниматься тяжелым трудом, что было отличительной чертой людей высшего класса.

Могу приметить то если приглядеться, на самих футлярах снова изображены драконы, а так же имеются растительные мотивы на самом Хучжи, хоть и мне не удалось конкретно разобрать к какому растению они потенциально могли принадлежать, я могу предположить что они отдаленно напоминают орхидей, что ассоциируется с мужской добродетелью в китайской традиции, но это всего-лишь предположение.

Из более мелких деталей можно отметить еле заметную отсылку на китайскую застежку на золотой пуговице воротника. А так же красная сережка с узлом, наиболее похожим на мистический китайский узел (Pan Chang), часто связанный с циклом жизни где нету ни начала, ни конца.

Теперь же мы можем начать обсуждение по поводу татуировки Циня, ибо сороконожки в китайской культуре считается символом долговечной жизни, исцеление и бессмертие которого его исторический оригинал пытался достичь при помощи эликсира. А потому, можно смело интерпретировать это как отражение того, чем занимался его оригинал.

Хотя есть одна маленькая деталь в плане его обуви, ибо узоры на ней точно такие же как у Чун Ян, хоть и сама обувь точь-в-точь не является той которая принадлежала ей потому что опять же, такие узоры часто использовались на одежде в те времена.

Из последних оставшихся деталей дизайна Циня, можно затронуть его повязку, которая пусть и не совсем имеет культурные отсылки, но имеет смысл в контексте его предыстории, ибо как вы могли заметить, на самой повязке есть узор из одежды самой Чун Ян. А мы все помним насколько близка она была к Циню что он даже после смерти носить эту повязку.

В заключении лишь могу сказать что дизайн персонажа однозначно хорош и очень запоминающийся, хоть и у всех разные предпочтения вместе с вкусами.

Что же до этой рубрики разбора дизайнов, то скорее всего следующие части будут на английском и русском языке для моего собственного удобства (ну или можете использовать переводчик для этого поста). А так, надеюсь вам понравился мой разбор (даже если я знаю что половина сабреддита не понимает русский язык).
