Talon Gate of Madara
I’m still relatively new to MTG and felt a little bit like a moron tonight because I didn’t really understand this, so maybe you guys can explain it to me.
I was playing Commander with 4 friends.
I used the 4 mana card ability on Talon Gate of Madara to attempt to phase out my opponent’s commander creature who was going to do lethal damage to me.
He responded with Defend the Rider to give his creature hexproof which negated Talon of Madaras phase out effect because it was a targeted ability.
I understand what hexproof does, but I am just confused by the timing. If I have to pay 4 and chose a target while Talon Gate is in my hand and it phases out the targeted creature when it enters the battlefield, wouldn’t the trigger happen based on the timing of when the card went out and not priority re: stack? Isn’t his creature technically targeted pre the card being played?
I am not trying to be a sore loser, just trying to understand how the order works
