Want to hide a new cache and have my dad get the FTF for his birthday

It‘s my dad’s birthday soon, and he’s really obsessed with geocaching. I figured that hiding caches around ocasions for him is a nice way to give him a present that’s also an activity he really enjoys.

Ideally, I‘d want him to get the FTF of course. I know where I want to hide it and I got the cache (it’s an old but sadly broken analog point and shoot camera that I‘m using as a container) and a location to put it. (Though I haven’t checked with our reviewer if it’s still free - though it’s on a 500m long bridge so I feel like I‘ll find something).

My question is: Is this something that is common/can be done etiquett-wise in general? And if so, how do I go about it?

a) do I ask the reviewer to publish on a certain date (if they acce that) and put in the description to let my dad get the FTF?

b) do I ask to publish AFTER date x and have him find it and get the FTF before it’s even published for everyone else?

c) any other options/ideas?

Had stuff stolen from a hostel dorm (luckily not THAT much)

I‘m in Palermo right now in a small hostel (ostello community Exclusive Dependance - no reason not to call them out). Today when I woke up, I noticed my bag of toiletries and my headphones were gone, that I had put beside the bed on the floor. Quickly found out that someone was missing their phone (That had charged IN their bed while they were sleeping) and at least one more person was also missing something.
the hostel owner/employee (not sure, but i think its his or his family‘s) seemed to have taken note of this thieving happening in the night (though also here im not sure), but definitely no one was able to stop them.

The thing is: There are two doors to get to my stuff. The one to the hostel downstairs and the dormroom door. The one downstairs is to be closed by guests ALWAYS when coming and going, but it’s kinda difficult to open/close or at least easy to miss if it’s not fully closed. This door being closed is basically in the responsibility of the guests - according to the hostel guy.

the doorm room door also locks, but has always been open since I arrived. I also never locked it, since I felt safe in the hostel. Today - after the incident - I locked it, and discovered that on one turn of the key you can still open the door, you need to do two to really lock it - something that easy to do but also easy to miss.

Anyway, the things I‘m missing are not super expensive to replace, but also not suuuuper cheap that I wouldn’t care at all. (Headphones 60€ newly bought toiletty-bag 25€, electric toothbrush ~50€ + some toiletries maybe 20€ to replace.) So 150€ roughly gone, though replacement might be slightly cheaper. Sucks a lot but could have been much worse easily as well, I‘m aware.

regardless, I‘m mad at the hostel/hostel guy for basically just saying „you did lock the door, it’s your own fault“. Which doesn’t sit quite right with me given that 1) yes the door downstairs should be closed by hostel guests, but still somehow the hostel’s responsibility as well 2) the room door lock is kinda shit anyway (as described) 3) Even if I PERSONALLY had locked the door when going to sleep, other guests might, or likely WOULD have entered, possibly leaving it unlocked. In a way, even with all of us not locking it, you could technically say the last one that entered is at fault. But that’s not my point, it’s rather: How can the hostel claim it’s my fault if I have to rely for the safety of my stuff on other guests?

for context: there are lockers, and I see how not putting my headphones there is kinda fully on me. But I feel like leaving toilettries outside HAS TO BE safe in a hostel, same goes for the other guest having their phone charge next to them sleeping.

Ultimately, my question is: a) Am I right to blame the hostel for a big part in this and b) do I have any legal grounds for them repl any of what’s missing?

TLDR: stuff stolen in hostel dorm, doors were unlocked with responsibility fully on me and other guests, hostels fault or mine?

▲ 27 r/RStudio

Trying to use R for my thesis, but ran into a problem 5 secons into it

EDIT: SOLVED

I figured before importing my data, I'd follow along a tutorial to get some basics down at least. I added up numbers, worked. Then tried to assign values to variables, and the programme just crashes every time as seen in my screenshot. Tried reinstalling R-studio, tried deleting some of the folders which I found might be a solution, but it keeps happening.

I'm just a beginner and maybe there's a very simple solution to this, but either way I'd appreciate any pointers on how to solve this, as for now I see no way to even work with this tool like this.

My first cache became public today!

The first cache of the three I‘ve hidden so far has been approved today! (one of the other two needs to change place though due to overlap).

Since I like to normally rhyme my logs, I made this cache‘s description a poem, too. Even translated it into english, still rhyming. Cache is in rural Austria, thiugh, so not sure if that was really worth doing.

Anyway, I hope someone finds it soon, and I‘ll go check on it again soon as well.

Cooking for big amounts of peple - looking for advice and recipe ideas

I‘m going to work in what is sort of a youth hostel (groups of kids go there for summer camps and stuff) as a chef. I‘ll be cooking for 30-100 persons, sometimes up to 150. I am a passionate home cook but not a professy trained one. I will normally have one person helping me with cooking/cleaning/dishwashing.
Sort of a disclaimer: The employer knows that. I personally also know that this will be a challenge at times. But I‘m confident I can manage.

i‘m looking for advice on two things:

First, general tips on cooking for large amounts of people - scaling dishes, calculating amounts, tecniqes to make my life easier, … would be very welcome!

I‘m especially versed in cooking vegetarian stuff, which is what 2 out of 3-4 dishes per day will be. Less so for cooking meat. There are obviously some things I‘m able to cook, but this is the department where I‘d be happy about some suggestions as well: Budget friendly, scalable meat-dishes.

i would be happy about any advice I can get!

Is Crowdfunding to save CS an option?

I‘m far from knowing a lot about business, so I could be very off.

But: CS is, to my knowledge, right now a business, even one that is trying to operate in a for-profit manner (though likely not a big one).

to me, that means:

1: CS has someone who owns it. and it has some kind of monetary value at which it would make sense for the owner/s to sell.

2: This value that CS could be sold for HAS TO be decreasing at the moment, quite possibly rather quick. And while there will be a plateau of userbase that will stay even with the new UI and everything, and even if some people come back and they end up fixing some things, likely CS can never reach the value it had a bunch of weeks ago. At least I couldn’t imagine HOW.

3: So IF they stick with the new sit, they will almost inevitably have lost money they can’t even make back by trying to milk it for money now.

4: So, in a capitalist society, if there IS a value to CS, there is a price at which it can be bought. (and at some point soon it will decline if it hasn already).

MY POINT IS: What if WE, the CS-community, try to crowdfund a takeover and then run it as a volunteer-based-nonprofit?

to clarify:

- I have no way to estimate WHAT the real-world value of CS what be

- I don’t know how many people would contribute, and it would take a ton so everyones contribution isn’t too big

- it probably wouldn’t bring everyone back

- but it would also enable financing CS in a different way and reversing the mandatory contribution. (—> e.g. by putting ads and having a paid ad-free version - to me personally that would have always been ghe no-brainer solution to this issue)

Am I missing something COMPLETELY or is there at least a tiiiiny chance that this could work?

Following the trend of making a tier-list

finally joining the trend as well...

All three that are in "haven't seen" I DID see a part of but not everything. Capture the flag and h&S NYC I saw the first episode, crime spree I thing there was one or two eps I didn't watch (and now my nebula subscription is over). Japan I will probably watch eventually.

It pained me to put Taiwan in A and not S since I loved it SO MUCH, but the game not having anything to prevent stalling in the last 2-3 episodes made them a bit lacking action-wise for me. REALLY hoping they'll do a very similar game format again, though. And I'm also expecting them to finally make another New-Zealand-style season.
