The Logistics of Paternity Leave. How to plan and when does it start?

My husband just got an AGR position, and I am due to give birth in just over 2 months. In a preliminary conversation with his new Flight Chief, he has been told he is entitled to the leave, and is being encouraged to take it all at once. That's actually better than what I thought we were going to have to do! I expected that because it's a new job, they'd want him to take as little time off to start a possible.

I know he will be able to ask more questions about "how it works," but in the meanwhile, I am curious and was able to look up what it says in this document: https://static.e-publishing.af.mil/production/1/af_a1/publication/dafi36-3003/dafi36-3003.pdf

"4.2.2.1.2.1.2. For the non-birth parent, 12 weeks of parental leave will be authorized during the 1-year period beginning no earlier than on the date of birth of the child."

Wonderful.

However, my question is how and when does he "put in" for the leave. I don't know when I am going into labor. I am going to do my darnedest to not have to be induced, which means there is a very wide swath of weeks when I could likely go into labor. Does he need to know ahead of time? Is he able to just take off that day of birth and then... stay home for the 12 weeks and do the paperwork after the fact?

How does it work logistically, if you don't know what day and week the birth will happen? Thank yoU!
