Sacramento businesses need to be required to accept their products back when disposing their products constitute hazardous waste

On today’s version of “What really chaps my ass”, we talk about the need for Sacramento to adopt a requirement that businesses which sell products that cannot be disposed other than through hazardous waste facilities, must accept their products back to dispose of them for free.

The closest Sacramento city hazardous waste disposal site is 10 miles and about a half an hour away from me. While I try to abide by rules for disposing hazardous materials, the distance is a major inconvenience here. Further, even though I might ensure that the products are disposed of properly, the more inconvenient it is to dispose of something the right way, the less people will do so. So I’m sure we have hazardous waste being disposed of in improper ways currently.

We need to put this back on the business businesses that sell product products that are deemed hazardous waste when being disposed. Some paint stores do this, but we need all businesses that sell products that can’t be disposed of normally to do this. They need to accept these products back and dispose of these for free for their customers. In my case it’s a simple can of Sterno which was used to keep some food heated.

Aside from reducing inconvenience, it would most certainly ensure that less people dispose of hazardous waste and properly in Sacramento.

Trouble getting a blue sky without a foreground that is too dark. What am I doing wrong?

I can’t get the foreground in this picture light enough without blowing out the sky. Using dark table. Settings are 1/250s, f8, iso 100. Turned on shadows and highlights and turned up shadows brilliance 100%. Masking creates negative effects too. Does anyone have any advice? I generally have trouble capturing a blue sky without getting a very dark foreground.

Hell No RTO!! (Part Deux)

One more. There were a lot of folks, but it was hard to capture all of them as they mainly congregated under the trees and in the shade.

Question for the Acting Community in Sacramento. Where to Find Theater, TV, Commercials or Film Community and Roles?

A friend is moving to Sacramento who is an experienced actor. They have done commercial work, been in theater and on TV. They’re hoping to find any acting communities here in Sacramento, and where to look for roles in theater, TV, commercials or film?

Can anyone recommend or advise on what’s available here in Sac and where to look? Thanks

DHCS RTO Exemption Clarifications

In the email to members on June 16th, SEIU stater that DHCS did not clarify a number of issues regarding RTO including how it would affect folks who were hired 100% telework and are currently teleworking 100%. I have yet to hear an update on this from SEIU or DHCS.

Has anyone heard from what the answer to this is (and what is your source)?

Fun fact (/s) More than half of states will recognize Juneteenth as a legal holiday in 2026 and California is not one of them

Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Texas and Louisiana are though. ::shakes head in disgust::

Has the state lost its union culture? If so, how do we get it back?

I worry it has. I don’t feel I’ve seen the union focus or interest in unionization as much as I’ve seen in the past, which was mostly from an older generation.

Maybe it’s just my department, but I’ve noticed that more new hires are more highly educated than in the past. For better or for worse, the state use to hire more folks without higher educational backgrounds and a lot of them worked their way up the ranks. I don’t see that as much anymore. Perhaps the state has become a more attractive option for highly educated folks. My perspective, which is just an assumption based on my experiences, is that folks with higher educational attainment, tend not to value a union as much, seeing it as associated with lower paying blue collar jobs, or “as protecting the worst workers”. These highly educated workers tend have a lot of confidence in their work performance and may not want to associate themselves with an organization that they see as associated with less capable workers. However these highly educated workers also seem to fail to recognize the benefits of unionization with collective bargaining, instead choosing to promote to obtain a higher salary.

Conversely, I’ve noticed in my experience that folks without as much higher educational attainment seem to be more able to recognize that association with a union protects them as much as others and nets them higher benefits through collective bargaining.

The last variable is age. More hires are younger and older workers are retiring. Unions have not been as prevalent during a younger workers life than older workers who may have grown up when unions were more a part of American life and thus they understood the benefits of a union and being active in one.

If you agree that we are loosing our union culture, how can we get it back? What do we as State of California employees need to do?

I expect departments travel budgets to be vastly increased if RTO goes through

If RTO goes through, I expect each department’s travel budget to increase exponentially. Why? Because apparently teams and Zoom calls are not sufficient for getting worked done. So if you have a stakeholder in LA., or you need to meet with a county representative in Humboldt or San Francisco or Napa, then we need to be able to travel to them to do the meetings. Because online just doesn’t cut it. We need to be able to say “nice to see you“, in order for real work to be done.

I hope this consistency of in person philosophy is applied, and the GO puts its money where its mouth is.

Have you ever tried to get authorization to travel for a meeting? Do you know how many ways they make you try to justify why the meeting cannot be held over Zoom or the phone? If they want to stick with Zoom calls and phone calls being good enough for the work we do with people in other parts of the state, then they have to accept that Zoom calls and phone calls are good enough for us to do our day-to-day work from home.

How is it legal for a foreign government to sue someone in the US under US law?

I’ve never understood this. Since the foreign government is not subject to US law, how can they sue someone using it?

AB 1729 Passed Out of Committee

Was just read off in the appropriations committee.

The exact language was “due pass with author’s amendments to make technical changes, out on an A roll call”.

Does anyone know what the language means exactly?

Better 1 or 2?

The first has strong vignetting that darkens the background, the other has no vignetting.

No critiques needed, just want to know your preference.

Concerned that SEIU is deprioritizing telework

SEIU has a long history of saying that right things when push to, promising to take a certain action, doing it for a small amount of time, and then deprioritizing and pivoting to something else. I’m concerned that this is happening with telework. Recently I got a BU1 update that made no mention to telework. You can’t see the whole update below but nothing in it mention telework.

Now I just received a telework bill update with a concerning statement that says “telework is not separate from this fight, it is part of it”. To me, this is a way of de prioritizing telework. They essentially say it is ONE of the priorities we are focusing on, and then they have full latitude to focus more energy on other issues they are focusing on.

We know that telework is the highest priority for most members. It also will make one of the biggest difference to the working conditions for the most members. To be sure, it will not affect everybody. But many priorities that are fought for do not affect every single person. And the highest amount of energy in the union is behind fighting for telework.

If you are able, please email or call SEIU (866.471.7348) to let them know that telework must be the priority. If you are part of BU1 you can email them at Unit1@seiu1000.org
