Ruturaj Gaikwad has genuinely been THE BIGGEST liability for CSK this season and people are too scared to say it because he is the captain.
300 runs in 12 matches looks decent until you actually watch the innings instead of worshipping the scorecard. 122 strike rate as an opener in 2026 is horrific. Absolute black hole batting. Teams around the league are scoring 70 to 80 in the powerplay while CSK spends half the innings recovering from their own opener gulping deliveries like his life depends on it.
Every single match starts with the same garbage script. Dot ball. Gentle push for one. Another dot. Lazy check drive. Scoreboard stuck. Required rate climbing. Then the other batter feels forced to attack because someone actually has to move the innings forward. When that batter gets out, everyone blames the middle order while the opener quietly walks away with his “anchoring” stats, which is also not happening.
One of his fifties was complete comedy. Wickets in hand, weak bowling attack, easy chase, golden opportunity to boost NRR and finish the game quickly. Instead this guy dragged the innings deep playing tuk tuk cricket while fans clapped for another “calm knock”. Now CSK are begging net run rate to save them because they wasted those chances earlier.
And the other fifty? People talk about the final score while conveniently forgetting he was 18 off 40 balls at one stage. 18 OFF 40. You could genuinely hear the innings dying ball by ball. Then he slogged a few boundaries later and suddenly everyone pretended the first half never happened. Any other opener playing an innings like that would get roasted for weeks.
The craziest part is the special treatment. If some uncapped Indian batter opened with these strike rates and this level of impact, he would have been kicked out after 3-4 games maximum. No debate. But because it is Ruturaj, people start posting edits about elegance and class while the team keeps sleepwalking through powerplays.
CSK basically starts every match one gear behind because their opener bats like he is terrified of taking risks. Watching him in the powerplay feels like watching a guy trying to protect his batting average during a team collapse except the collapse has not even started yet.
This season exposed how badly people confuse looking classy with actually winning games.
CSK’s biggest injury this season was not to a fast bowler or some all rounder. It was the mentally injured captain and opener, Ruturaj Gaikwad.
One over he looks like he finally gets captaincy, next over one boundary goes away and this guy’s body language collapses like someone unplugged him. His Shoulders down, that clueless face, no energy, barely talking to bowlers, no plans B, no intent. Just standing there looking lost while the game slips away. You can literally feel the team losing confidence through the screen.
And what the hell was that obsession with benching Akiel Hussain again and again? Every time he plays, he contributes. Every time he gets momentum, he disappears from the XI. Peak clown management backed by a captain who looks scared to make bold calls. Is he even making any calls or is he just a puppet?
Then today’s post match interview just exposed everything. Man actually said 160 was par and they had 20 extra. Brother they chased it with 20 deliveries left. 20. That is not a “slightly wrong read”, that is being completely disconnected from the match you just played. Every interview is the same NPC garbage. “We were 10 runs short”, “we need to improve”, “boys tried hard”. Zero honesty, zero accountability, zero actual cricketing insight.
Now the batting. Absolute horror season. Openers across the league are smashing at 180 to 200 strike rate like it’s normal T20 cricket in 2026 and winning their teams the match in powerplay itself. Meanwhile Rutu is crawling at 122 as an opener. 122. That stat is criminal in modern IPL. Entire powerplay gets wasted while the other opener and middle order are forced to play catch up because this guy wants to cosplay a 2011 ODI anchor.
Even CSK’s two wins felt painful because they dragged easy chases so deep instead of finishing quickly and boosting NRR. Now the team is sitting with garbage NRR near zero and even if they somehow win the next two games, qualification depends on that same NRR they casually threw away.
People will blame injuries all season, but the reality is CSK kept playing a mentally injured captain and opener who looked checked out half the time.

CSK are basically done if this is the level they keep showing. Needing 5 out of 5 and playing like this is just straight up delusion at this point.
The biggest problem no one wants to call out properly is Ruturaj Gaikwad. Dude has been absolutely terrible. Not just out of form but straight up useless for a team that needs him urgently. Those two so called decent scores were slow as hell and one of them came when there was zero pressure. That is just stat padding, where you could have gained some extra NRR points.
Meanwhile the entire batting is hanging on Sanju Samson like he is carrying dead weight. Every time CSK wins it is because Sanju shows up. Failure from him and the whole batting lineup collapses like a house of cards. Forget about chasing more than 180, that is not happening with this batting.
And people still want to talk about playoffs? With this inconsistency? With top order playing like they are stuck in 2011? Forget it.
LSG, GT, SRH are not going to roll over. They will expose this batting even harder.
Unless Gaikwad wakes up and starts playing like he actually belongs in the XI, CSK can pack their bags early.
