Day 1 of learning Maya Rigging. Coming from an animation background to build rigs that animators will actually love. Tips for a beginner?

Hi everyone! I’ve officially decided to master Autodesk Maya rigging. My goal is to understand the core mechanics so deeply that I can build universal rigs for any industry, whether it's games or VFX.

Here is my secret weapon: I already have experience in animation. I know firsthand the pain of downloading a beautiful model only to find out the controllers are a nightmare to work with. I know exactly what an animator needs from a tool, and I want to use this perspective to create flawless, user-friendly rigs.

Right now, I’m at absolute zero on the technical side, looking at the Maya rigging menus like they are alien technology. I’ll be using this Reddit account to document my progress, share my funny setup fails, and keep myself accountable.

Animators and technical artists of Reddit: what is the most annoying thing you often find in bad rigs that I should avoid from day one? And riggers: what tutorials helped you the most at the start?
