Looking to connect with the local Punjabi diaspora; along with other local Indians

I’m a local independent film distributor here in the city, and I’ve been working on a project to bring more regional Indian cinema to our local screens.

We all know Hong Kong’s cinema culture is incredibly diverse, but there is a clear gap when it comes to regional film industries. While the massive Bollywood blockbusters usually get a wide release, smaller but equally impactful films from the Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and other regional industries often struggle to find a consistent home here. Even when they do, it's often a "one-off" show with zero promotion.

I’m trying to change that and build a sustainable scene where these films have a regular, accessible presence.

However, I don't want to just "drop" movies into theaters—I want to build a community around them. I’m looking to connect with:

  • Community Leaders/Organizers: Who are the people or groups (sports clubs, cultural associations, student groups, etc.) that really move the needle for these specific communities?
  • Cultural Hubs: Outside of the obvious spots, where does the South Asian community actually gather and share news/recommendations?
  • Preferences: For those of you who follow these film industries, what’s the biggest barrier to catching these in a theater? Is it the timing, the lack of community buzz, or something else?

My goal isn't just to "sell tickets," but to create a space where people can actually get together and enjoy these films as an event, not just a viewing.

If you are part of these communities or know how to best connect with them to share news on upcoming titles, I’d love to hear your advice. I want to make sure I’m putting in the effort where it actually resonates.

Thanks for any insights! 🍿
