Columbo’s real motive: marital pettiness

Fun thought just struck me. Maybe Columbo solves murders because Mrs Columbo keeps comparing him to the suspects

In Short Fuse, Ida Lupino says the commissioner sent his best man, Columbo. He replies that his wife thinks he’s second best… with about eighty other guys tied for first.

Then in Swan Song, Columbo doesn’t even seem officially assigned to the crash. He says he read about it in the paper, thought the pilot was lucky to be alive, and mentions his wife is relieved because she’s a big Tommy Brown fan.

He’s one of the 80 guys she says is better than her husband. Along with Ward Fowler etc. Because that happens all the time. His wife is constantly a huge fan of the charming singer, the handsome author, the brilliant surgeon, the rich conductor, the famous TV chef. And they all turn out to be bad guys.

So maybe Columbo isn’t driven by class resentment or moral outrage. Maybe it’s as simple as every morning over breakfast, Mrs Columbo is saying things like:

“Why can’t you dress more like him?”

“Why can’t you be charming like him?”

“Why can’t you make money like him?”

And Columbo just quietly folds the paper, puts on the raincoat, and goes off to destroy another one of her celebrity crushes.

Then he gets home and says:

“Funny thing, sweetheart. That guy you wanted me to be more like? He killed his wife.”

19 days, 70,000 words update

19 days since I bought my Neo and posted about it here. Figured I’d report back although my use case won’t be the same as others.

I’m a professional writer so I’ve hit at least 70k words on this thing so far. That’s just first draft writing and not including updating old versions and making notes etc - so maybe a tad higher than that in reality.

Cons: Zero. It’s a little beast for my needs. I was worried I’d miss backlights for the keyboard as I work into the early hours. Haven’t missed them at all. Couldn’t be happier with the purchase.

Pros: Switching between apps and browsers is seamless and smooth. Nothing lags. I’m
Not a coder and I don’t edit video but I’ve hammered the keyboard and it’s keeping up with me no problem. I’ve watched movies and tv shows on it and again it’s great. All the smaller apps like email and notes etc work perfectly. I’ve turned it fully off and on again maybe three times. No issues. The battery is great. Never once run out. Done a few meetings over it with and without Bluetooth headphones and the sound was perfect as was the image and connection. I carry it around a lot. It’s on a par with my old iPad Pro connected to a keyboard case weight wise.

If you’re a student and on the fence or someone who just writes a lot I’d say go for it.

Haven’t used a laptop in years…

Been writing full time on iPad Pro for years, but recently my workflow changed just enough to justify getting a laptop again. Cute little bastard. Looking forward to seeing how it holds up.

Edit: you should be able to find the wallpaper here for those asking for it.

WLA Landgirls and farmers circa 1942

My partner’s grandmother is the last girl on the left. Evacuated from London to work in the countryside. She came back to London to paint scenery for British propaganda movies.

Time related alibi

I’m rereading The Three Musketeers (1844) and thought of Bill Shatner and others when d’Artagnan needs an alibi so alters a clock to fool his friend. I wonder if this is the earliest example?
