Student buying advice: 2006 Saab 9-3 SportCombi 1.9 TiD
Hey guys,
I’m a student and I’m looking for a cool but still somewhat reasonable daily car. I really like Saabs and I found one locally that looks pretty interesting, but I’d like some advice before I go see it in person.
The car is a 2006 Saab 9-3 SportCombi / Estate, 1.9 TiD 110 kW / 150 hp, 6-speed manual, around 287,000 km.
It is listed on Marketplace in two ads, one for around 2,100 € and another around 2,200 €. It was previously listed higher, around 3,100 €, so the price has already dropped.
For context, most 9-3s in similar visible condition in my area are usually listed around 3,000–4,000 €, so this one is noticeably cheaper. That makes it attractive, but also makes me wonder if there is something I’m missing.
I checked the VIN with a Saab decoder and public records, and it seems to match the car:
- 2006 Saab 9-3 Estate / SportCombi
- 1.9 TiD Z19DTH diesel
- 110 kW / 150 hp
- 6-speed manual
- front-wheel drive
- Jet Black metallic
- grey leather interior
- Linear trim
- xenon headlights with washers
- GPS/navigation
- 6 CD changer
- 10 speakers
- parking sensors
- rain sensor
- cruise control
- heated front seats
- 17" wheels
- DPF / particulate filter listed in the options
Free public checks I did so far:
- originality check says the car passed / is suitable
- originality check was done in 2016, probably when the car was imported
- technical and emissions inspection is valid until August 2026
- car is not listed as stolen
- vehicle operation is not suspended
- no obvious issue with VIN/model match
- emissions history shows:
- 2018 passed
- 2020 failed once, then passed about a week later
- 2022 passed
- 2024 passed
- odometer graph from emissions checks only shows the trend, not exact values, but it goes steadily upward with no obvious mileage rollback shown
I spoke with the seller on the phone. He sounded fairly open and started mentioning maintenance himself without me asking too much. He said the car has had several things done over time, including:
- dual mass flywheel
- timing belt
- something in the xenon headlights
- suspension bushings / silentblocks
- and other maintenance after it was imported / during ownership
The downside is that he said he does not have invoices for everything, so I can’t fully prove all of that.
He also said the car has not been driven regularly for about half a year, mostly just moved around when needed.
Another issue is that the tires are old and he said they probably need replacing soon, possibly even that they would not pass inspection. Since the car is on 17" wheels, that is an immediate extra cost.
The listing describes the car as having:
- 1.9 diesel, 110 kW
- 287k km
- 6-speed manual
- xenons
- dual-zone climate
- leather interior
- heated front seats
- parking sensors
- built-in SIM phone
- 6 CD changer
- subwoofer in the trunk
- inspection valid until 08/2026
From photos, the car looks pretty clean for its age. Interior is worn but not destroyed. Exterior looks decent, but I haven’t seen the underside yet, so rust is still a big question.
As a student, I don’t mind doing normal maintenance, but I really want to avoid a car that immediately needs a huge repair like DPF, turbo, clutch/DMF again, injectors, or major rust work.
What would you guys specifically check on a test drive and inspection for this car?
Would you consider this a decent buy if it drives well and the underside is clean?
Or is a 9-3 1.9 TiD at this mileage still too risky for someone with a limited student budget?
Thanks in advance!
