New to the club! And I have a question

Hello everyone. Yesterday I bought this 9-3 aero anniversary and I'm loving it so far. I just wanted to ask about how do I change the sidelight / parking light bulbs? I would like to put some NOT bright LEDs in as I think it would work really well with the paint colour but I can't seem to figure it out and I can't find any tutorials online. Thanks!

How likely is insurance to cover this?

Hit a deer on Friday night and I’m waiting to see if insurance will cover the repair, they said over the phone they would but the adjusters haven’t come out to look at it. Shouldn’t be too much to pay for but it’s also a 240k mile car and not worth anything in the eyes of insurance. Do y’all think I’m shit out of luck or will this get repaired through insurance?

My two Saabs

The only two cars I’ve ever owned. Both 90s 900s but the blue one (my first) was a turbo! Man I miss them, I’m saving up for a third one day 😝 bought both on craigslist in NY and while they were heartbreaking (vintage car woes) they both brought me an immense amount of joy—I know other Saab owners can relate!

Student buying advice: 2006 Saab 9-3 SportCombi 1.9 TiD

Hey guys,

I’m a student and I’m looking for a cool but still somewhat reasonable daily car. I really like Saabs and I found one locally that looks pretty interesting, but I’d like some advice before I go see it in person.

The car is a 2006 Saab 9-3 SportCombi / Estate, 1.9 TiD 110 kW / 150 hp, 6-speed manual, around 287,000 km.

It is listed on Marketplace in two ads, one for around 2,100 € and another around 2,200 €. It was previously listed higher, around 3,100 €, so the price has already dropped.

For context, most 9-3s in similar visible condition in my area are usually listed around 3,000–4,000 €, so this one is noticeably cheaper. That makes it attractive, but also makes me wonder if there is something I’m missing.

I checked the VIN with a Saab decoder and public records, and it seems to match the car:

- 2006 Saab 9-3 Estate / SportCombi
- 1.9 TiD Z19DTH diesel
- 110 kW / 150 hp
- 6-speed manual
- front-wheel drive
- Jet Black metallic
- grey leather interior
- Linear trim
- xenon headlights with washers
- GPS/navigation
- 6 CD changer
- 10 speakers
- parking sensors
- rain sensor
- cruise control
- heated front seats
- 17" wheels
- DPF / particulate filter listed in the options

Free public checks I did so far:

- originality check says the car passed / is suitable
- originality check was done in 2016, probably when the car was imported
- technical and emissions inspection is valid until August 2026
- car is not listed as stolen
- vehicle operation is not suspended
- no obvious issue with VIN/model match
- emissions history shows:
- 2018 passed
- 2020 failed once, then passed about a week later
- 2022 passed
- 2024 passed
- odometer graph from emissions checks only shows the trend, not exact values, but it goes steadily upward with no obvious mileage rollback shown

I spoke with the seller on the phone. He sounded fairly open and started mentioning maintenance himself without me asking too much. He said the car has had several things done over time, including:

- dual mass flywheel
- timing belt
- something in the xenon headlights
- suspension bushings / silentblocks
- and other maintenance after it was imported / during ownership

The downside is that he said he does not have invoices for everything, so I can’t fully prove all of that.

He also said the car has not been driven regularly for about half a year, mostly just moved around when needed.

Another issue is that the tires are old and he said they probably need replacing soon, possibly even that they would not pass inspection. Since the car is on 17" wheels, that is an immediate extra cost.

The listing describes the car as having:

- 1.9 diesel, 110 kW
- 287k km
- 6-speed manual
- xenons
- dual-zone climate
- leather interior
- heated front seats
- parking sensors
- built-in SIM phone
- 6 CD changer
- subwoofer in the trunk
- inspection valid until 08/2026

From photos, the car looks pretty clean for its age. Interior is worn but not destroyed. Exterior looks decent, but I haven’t seen the underside yet, so rust is still a big question.

As a student, I don’t mind doing normal maintenance, but I really want to avoid a car that immediately needs a huge repair like DPF, turbo, clutch/DMF again, injectors, or major rust work.

What would you guys specifically check on a test drive and inspection for this car?

Would you consider this a decent buy if it drives well and the underside is clean?

Or is a 9-3 1.9 TiD at this mileage still too risky for someone with a limited student budget?

Thanks in advance!

High knock count

Hi! Had a friend connect up a tech2 to my Saab 9-5 b205 biopower 2006. We noticed that the knock count on all cylinders where quite high. Took for a <10km drive and the counts increased pretty equally on all cylinders. Didn't seem like engine load had much to say on the counts. Any tips for what could cause this? Is it something I should look into? Can also mention that I sometimes have trouble with having to crack a lot before the engine starts, I can almost never start it with less than three cranks and sometimes 7+ cranks.

CPS help 08 9-5 2.3t

My 9-5 died last week, and wouldn’t turn over. I ended up replacing the crankshaft position sensor, and my car would turn over. At first it would take a second or two longer than usual to turn over, but now it won’t turn over again. Do I need to try and reposition the sensor?

Someone in the northern Utah please sell me your 900 Turbo!! That’s all…

Been looking for one for years and I’m surprised how rarely they come up. This is probably a long shot but if anyone in Utah has one in reasonable condition and wants to sell it I’m looking to buy

Battery not charging

Hello, I got a battery not charging alert on my 2005 Saab 9-3 Arc convertible 2.0T while driving home in hot weather (100°F).

Battery reads 11.5V with car running.

Does the serpentine belt look in correct position?

CarPlay unit for my 04 9-3.

just wanted to post a quick review of the saabplus carplay unit since ive seen a few people asking about modernizing the 03-06 fiber optic setups.

ive had it in for a week now and overall im super happy with it.

the good

*actually plug and play. took me maybe 30 mins to install, didnt have to hack up the factory wiring harness or bypass the fiber optics.

*the radio works perfectly and all the buttons on the dash are still completely operable. plus the sid display on top of the dash is perfectly visible and not blocked.

*wireless carplay connects pretty fast and the whole interface is really snappy to use.

the catch: (the center vent):

alright so the trade-off is how it mounts. because of the bracket, it pretty much blocks the center air vent. you can still feel some air bleeding out around the sides of the screen, but it inhibits direct airflow from that main vent.

if you live somewhere super hot and need max a/c blasting right at your face, this might annoy you. personally i just angle the side vents and it cools down the cabin fine, but definitely something to keep in mind.

overall if you can live with losing that vent, its honestly the cleanest way to get bluetooth and nav into a pre-facelift 9-3 without ripping the whole dash apart. completely reversible too.

let me know if you guys have any questions!!!

The one (I never actually owned) that got away

A couple of weeks back me and my fiancé were on our way back home from the in-laws. It an hour long drive and she insisted on driving, which I didn't mind, since that'd mean I'm in charge of music.

About 20 minutes from home she asks if we can switch driver's since she's not feeling well. I tell her to stop on the next exit and as I walk around our car I see an older car with the hood open standing on the side of this small dirt road we're now on. I take a second look at it and see that it's in fact a 4-door Saab 900I.

I tell my fiancé that I'm checking out the car and what's become of the driver. When I get closer I can see that the exterior is in rough shape, although the interior looks nice save for a sleeping bag, a spare wheel and some miscellaneous tools in the back seat. Under the hood there's a set of sockets and a wrench lying on the fender and I can feel that the engine is still quite warm. I take another look inside the cockpit and see that the car isn't locked.

This is when I start to wonder whether the car might have been stolen, so I tell my fiancé who's come to check on me to call the police and ask whether the car is reported as such. As she's speaking with the police I start to investigate the environment and after a couple of minutes I see a man in his early 20's coming toward us on a snowmobile trail.

The man has a towel and swimming trunks over his shoulder and looks a bit misplaced, especially since we're on the side of the highway, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I walk up to him and ask him if he might be the owner of the Saab. He explains that it is indeed his car and that he parked it there because of the engine was overheating, so he decided to leave the hood open and go for a swim in the meantime. I run over to my fiancé and tell her that the police is no longer needed since I've found the owner.

Then me and the owner start to discuss Saab. He asks if I'm a fan and I confess that a classic Saab 900 is in fact my dream car. He tells me that his actually is for sale, should I be interested. I ask for the price and he tells me that he'd like to get about 17 000 Swedish crowns (about 1760 USD) for it, the exact amount of money I had put aside for Taxes. I confessed that I unfortunately don't have that money to buy a car right now and to my surprise he actually asked how much I WOULD be able to pay for it. I told him that I wouldn't be able to pay more than 6000SEK and he said that it (obviously) wasn't enough, since he had himself had bought it for 4000SEK, and since he had renovated the gearbox, brakes and some other stuff and gotten it through inspection without any issues and so he figured that he wanted to get his money back in addition to some profit, which I thought was fair.

Ever since that moment though, I've been thinking about whether or not I made the right decision. I COULD have saved up the money for taxes again after buying the car and I could've maybe convinced him to go down a bit in price, who knows? Sure, it was a 4-door sedan and not a 3-door hatchback but still... it would've had a hell of a backstory, had I decided to buy it.
