Building resilience in 12 year old

Dear hive, I have a 12 year old. She is generally well behaved and helps out. I was wondering how do I build resilience in them. She is a bit laid-back and I have to nudge her at times. She wants to swim competitively. I am ok with it as long as her grades don't fall. How do you manage to make them independent?

I am not a helicopter parent and would love for her to learn to plan ahead and be independent. I work full-time and have a long commute. Don't have the mental bandwidth to deal with this. Help me please!
