The MOQ on 1688 isn’t always the real MOQ

One thing I've noticed when talking with Chinese suppliers is that the MOQ shown on a 1688 listing isn't always the final number they are willing to accept.

For example, a supplier may show an MOQ of 500 pieces on the listing, but when you actually talk to them, they may be willing to discuss a smaller trial order.

It depends on things like:

• whether the product is already in production
• whether they have stock or ready-made materials
• how many variations/colors you need
• whether you're asking for custom packaging
• whether you're testing the supplier for the first time

Of course, this doesn't mean every supplier will accept a small order. Some factories really do have strict MOQs because of production costs.

But I wouldn't automatically reject a supplier just because the MOQ on the 1688 page looks too high.

If you're sourcing from 1688, what has been your experience with MOQ?

Have you ever managed to negotiate a much smaller first order?

I’m based in China — what do you wish you knew before sourcing from China?

Hi everyone,
I’m based in China and regularly visit factories and communicate with Chinese suppliers.
Recently, I’ve noticed that many small businesses and online sellers want to source products from China, but often struggle with things like:
• Finding reliable suppliers
• Understanding 1688
• Communicating with factories
• MOQ and pricing
• Checking product quality
• Samples and small orders
• Shipping from China
I’m not a manufacturer myself, but I spend quite a bit of time around Chinese suppliers and factories, so I thought I’d start sharing some of what I see from the China side.
I’ll be sharing factory visits, products, sourcing tips and things I learn along the way.
If you’re currently sourcing something from China, feel free to leave a comment. I’d be interested to know what products people are looking for and what problems you’re having.
