Bookend Song Opening Riff on violin (Day 24)

Another day without the pitch detector and more of a focus on matching the flow of the riff, getting better

Bookend Song Opening Riff on violin (Day 23)

This one is sort of special, because I did this without the pitch detector and got it pretty well, especially the G#s! I think the only thing I messed up on was the C at the end...which probably means the B and A were off too but that's ok. It won't be much longer until I can get the tempo down, looking forward to it!

Bookend Song Opening Riff on violin (Day 22)

Another solid one, but flicking my eyes between the pitch detector and sheets still trips me up, but I think my ears are finally getting more attuned to the sharps and flats to where I might not need it soon.

Bookend Song Opening Riff (Day 21)

Had violin practice today, so I was a bit tired and this was my first attempt. Still, I'm satisfied with this one, I tried to follow the tempo of the song more this time around, obvious string crossing issues aside, and was surprised at how many notes I got right.

Bookend Song Opening Riff on Violin (Day 20)

Not too bad, fixed the bowing today at least. This was the best of the batch, as for whatever reason, I was just missing note after note and losing my position when my eyes flicked to the pitch detector I have on the side. That didn't just happen with Bookend Song, but with everything I practiced afterwards, making it a pretty short session today.

Bookend Song Opening Riff on Violin (Day 19)

A hiccup at the end missing that high C, but otherwise not bad. Sooner or later I'm gonna need to cleanup my bowing, which in my defense, is more of a product of not being used to playing without a mute. I play with the bow very lightly because I'm worried about making the violin even louder than it already is, which isn't an issue with the mute.

Bookend Song Opening Riff on Violin (Day 18)

Pretty solid for the most part, except at the end where I choked lol. I'll be honest, I thought nailing those final notes yesterday was a fluke, but I'm happy that it appears that it wasn't. I'm getting the intonation down faster than I thought!

Bookend Song Opening Riff on violin (Day 16)

This one is much slower, as to keep focusing on the intonation. You'll notice I really tripped up with the final two measures, keep forgetting there's no sharp/flat between B and C. Honestly hate playing this slow lol, but it's important, as my teacher always reminds me.

Bookend Song Opening Riff on violin (Day 15)

Awkwardly delivered, but I think this is the closest I've gotten intonation wise

Booken Song Opening Riff on Violin (Day 14)

I took u/Amazing-Eggplant-895 advice and focused on the intonation today, playing with a Pitch Detector (which I probably should've been doing at the start lol). I'm getting better and landing those G and C Sharps on the G string, now I just need to get used to the F and G naturals on the E string at the end.

Bookend song Opening Riff on violin (Day 13)

Had to practice with a mute today because family had guest over. Decided to practice on string crossing speed today rather than intonation, and I feel like I can get it down easier than the intonation, the quarter note duration feels a bit tricky though.

Bookend Song opening riff on violin (Day 12)

This one is alright, best of the batch I made practicing it, just need to get the timing of crossing the strings down. Getting more comfortable practicing without a mute

Replaying through Stormblood, thought of some interesting implications

Inb4 "what about the cerulean engines?" if the captain's dialgue to Alisaie is anything to go by, those were a secret and they didn't use them, at least maybe until they were past the Siren dungeon, but even then that's still a shit ton of time sailing by the wind.

It's also funny looking back Yugiri and Gosetsu's journey's to Eorzea's with the time bubble in mind. In Yugiri's case, she says her passengers are basically on death's door and are in desperate need of aid and supplies, which only makes sense if they've been a sea for months. Meanwhile, Gosetsu rowed his ass to Ul'dah from somewhere to the East, which of course he could survive regardless of the time because he's just that guy!

Bookend Opening Riff on Violin (Day 11)

After a few frustrating attempts, I got this one. I think I prefer the way it sounds without the mute, and will probably be keeping it off from now on. Also, in a previous attempt, rather than confront my discomfort with G and C sharp, I thought I could just make them naturals instead, spoiler alert, it sounded like shit, even compared to this.

Bookend Opening Riff on Violin (Day 10)

It's only now that I realize my bow sliding all over the place as I play, which, to be fair, is something I'm actively working on in general, but here I was thinking I could get this done in another week or so thinking all that was left was intonation. Who knows, maybe I still can, but it just goes to show that creating music, or any art in general, is an uphill battle.

Wasn't feeling well today, but still wanted to get some practice in. Hopefully it sounds better than yesterday

u/MirrahPaladin — 18 days ago

Yeah, this one is rough, and it wasn't even my first attempt. In my defense, it was after violin practice and I was tired, but still.

The meat of the issue is now I've moved onto intonation, and the piece (which I'll post in the comments) is in A Major, meaning the Fs, Cs, and Gs are all sharp. Fs and C aren't too bad...at least when they aren't on the G string, I'm incredibly unfamiliar with C# on the G String. Speaking of the G String, that G is now also sharp, which I've never done before so now the piece sounds super weird to me.

Still wanted to post this anyway, because sharing failures and short comings is important to growth and making music and all that, plus I hope maybe all this is inspiring people to try out the riff for themselves

I think I've gotten the string crossings down! Now comes the part I've dreaded, intonation lol.
