how do i get my slugpup through the depths without it being completely obliterated

at the very end of my first hunter run (took about 6 hours) just for my first successful subterranian run (coming from shoreline) then the guardians completely brutalise my slugpup who ive been carrying for nearly 5 hours. is it actually possible for hunter to carry her kids through depths?
