Training birds

Picking up some birds for the first time Thursday to do some training. Have only hunted wild birds, never planted or dealt with live birds. They come in mesh bags. I was planning on putting the bags inside the dog kennel in the back of the truck. The dog will be in the truck with me, don’t use the kennel often anymore.

Any pointer for handing the birds in general and planting them? Getting three chukkar and 3 pheasants. I just needed a couple birds for hold training. Thought this would be a fun way to get them

Retrieval help

My dog treats an ear of corn like a bird. He chews the husk off and won’t bring it to me. Does the same behavior with a pheasants stomach feathers. I think I might be able to teach him to fix this with the ear of corn and it will translate to a bird. Any pointers on how to get him to bring it to me and not chew on it? He has done it a couple times and I have clicked and rewarded with a treat. He is clicker trained, I’m going to buy some better treats and see if that helps.

How to find crappies

Going to a cabin for the Fourth of July weekend. I’m hoping to catch some crappies and have a fish fry. I was just going to troll around until I hopefully mark some fish on the fish finder then jig on them. Is there a better way than just driving around aimlessly. It’s bay lake in Minnesota if that makes a difference.

Is anything in season in the us this time of year?

Just took the pup on a nice trip to the mountains. Only thing we were missing is some hunting. This is a good time of year for me to go on vacation. Is anything in season?

Can I help teach my dog to retrieve or force fetch shooting rabbits in the yard. They get after our garden so we get rid of them anyways. Thought I might be able to use it to help with retrieving.
