What are your thoughts about sped up trumpet influencers?

Without naming names I feel a flash of anger every time I see a social media trumpet player speeding up their performances. Some go so far as to admit doing so, apparently without shame.

The insult to me comes from the fact that it’s hard to play fast. Speeding up a take for IG views cheapens it.

Probably I’m just overreacting and jealous of the millions of views these videos sometimes get.

Where do I go from here?

Im about 7 years into my jazz learning journey wondering where I should go from here? These days I spend my time learning tunes and transcribing vocabulary. I would be grateful for any critical feedback about my playing (do the outside segments work? Is my phrasing really bad?) and/or any recommendations about what to practice.

I didn’t go to music school and don’t have a teacher. I know I have a long way to go. I’m hoping that this community can point me in the right direction.

Tune learning question

How many tunes do you have on the go at once?

I’m about 30 songs into the American songbook. What works for me is a combo of in depth sessions and spaced repetition.

My process for the in depth session is

  1. Listen (at least 20x, the more the better)
  2. Learn the head (lyrics)
    - slowly first, then at tempo, finally alone
  3. Learn the changes (form, chords)
    - I’ll glance at I real to get a sense of the map (where the resolutions are and the form) and then I’ll practice arpeggios around 60bpm until I can do so without the app

Once I feel confident - usually after 1-3 in depth sessions - I’ll start working on something new. But I’ll revisit each song about 2-3 times a week until I can nail the head and changes first try each time.

Any tips?

A chorus on Just friends

I took a long break from the horn, returning to daily practice around the tail end of Covid. Here’s a chorus on just friends. Any feedback is appreciated:)

Recently had my trumpet serviced. It’s a Bach 37. I noticed a number of spots where the silver was stripped by the acid bath. I can understand some damage especially around the valve casing owing to the constant wear from my hands. A bit more concerning though are the spots on the lead pipe.

Are these normal results?
