I once shared a transatlantic flight with Viggo Mortensen

(I already shared this story in the Viggo sub months ago, so if it's familiar to some of you, that's the reason haha. It happened about 10 years ago and at that time I was not in my LOTR-fangirl phase which was probably fortunate because I might have harassed him otherwise, haha.)

So I am originally from Belgium but about 10 years ago, I was travelling from Madrid to Boston. While I was waiting in line to get boarded I heard someone talking in English on the phone and the voice was familiar so I turned to look and first I didn't recognise him, even though I had watched the LOTR movies many times, but he looked quite different in real life, you know, short grey hair and no facial hair, but I had also watched Eastern Promises so I knew him without facial hair too, haha. So after a few moments I realised, hey this looks like Viggo Mortensen!! At first I didn't want to believe it, and I didn't know that he was living in Madrid, so I was like, why would he be in Madrid, haha.

Then I noticed his lip scar which is quite visible in real life and I remembered he had a lip scar, so I'm thinking, wow this really must be him. He has the Aragorn voice, he looks like Viggo, he has the lip scar, it surely must be him, haha. Then I noticed he had an American passport in his hand, so that also checked out. He was standing in line like two metres away from me. He was wearing a baseball cap and he was looking downwards most of the time, I guess he didn't want to be recognised.

I didn't go up to him because I'm very shy and I didn't want to disturb him, but I couldn't not watch him, haha. I had loved him in LOTR. I also had a bit of a crush on him. Then I heard another person around me whispering "Viggo Mortensen", but I don't know what they said exactly because they were Spanish. They didn't go up to him either.

Anyway Viggo was travelling alone and in standard economy class, absolutely no fuss or special treatment. I think the majority of people had no idea who he was.

We got on the plane and of course I was watching him and hoping he would be seated near me, haha. We ended up quite near, me in an aisle seat and him in a window seat two rows behind me, I could totally see him if I turned backwards. Imagine how hard it was not to turn backwards constantly to stare at him, haha.

It was a 8-9 hour flight, so I did get to look at him a few times, like when I was going to the toilet etc. I saw him read a book, use his laptop and at one point he was asleep.

After we landed I considered going up to him for a photo but he didn't seem to be in good mood somehow, he seemed tense and tired. Nobody went up to him so it's not that he was rude or anything, I just got the vibes he doesn't want to be disturbed. He was asleep shortly before landing so maybe he was grumpy after waking up, haha. But anyway I am not someone who collects autographs or wants pictures at any price, I was thrilled enough that I got to share a flight with him, even though we had no interaction. And I am REALLY shy haha. I probably would have gone up to him if others had done so, but I didn't want to be the first one and didn't want to draw attention to him (and myself).

That's my Viggo story. I thought some of you might find it interesting!

"7 impressions of Viggo" a short film by his friend Alix Lambert, I think these short clips capture Viggo's essence so well!

Ralph Fiennes talked a little bit about his upcoming movie "Embers" and working with Viggo in an interview 2 months ago. He says the movie is coming "probably next year". The Embers part of the interview is from 2:15 until 3:25

Viggo almost drowning while filming The Two Towers is one of the scariest behind the scenes videos. I can't imagine what they would have done if something bad had happened

Which Viggo movie out of these should I watch next?

My list of movies I haven't watched yet but I'm planning to:

Jauja

The Reflecting Skin

A Walk on the Moon

Indian Runner

Which do you think is the best one? Thanks.

Big thanks to u/RammPatricia for finding the 2016 Jimmy Kimmel interview with Viggo. I'll upload it separately because it's a very funny one and worth watching!

Does any of you have the video of Viggo's appearance on Jimmy Kimmel's show in 2016? Here's a snapshot from it

The gentleness and compassion in Viggo's delivery of the line "You bow to no one" makes it so much better. One of the best delivered lines in the trilogy

I've always found it so cool that the Fellowship actors got matching LOTR tattoos, especially as tattoos were much less common in 2000 so it was an even bigger gesture than it would be today. And for several of them it was their first ever tattoo

Have you ever noticed Viggo's scar above his lip? Here's how he got it

"I had just turned 18 and it was Halloween. I went to a party and I got quite drunk. I don’t know why, I was just crazy, but I stole a case of beer and a deerskin rug and ran out the back door of this house. I was running through some back gardens and the owners of the beer wanted their things back, so they chased me, then punched me and I ended up falling into a barbed wire fence and cut my lip open… I must have looked quite the picture because I had dressed up as Ziggy Stardust. I had the blue-red lightning bolt, all the make-up, the hair, everything. I looked like David Bowie on the cover of ‘Aladdin Sane’. But I ended up with a split lip and blood all over myself and my clothes. I wish I had a photograph...we went to a clinic and the doctor was 80 at least and it was 2 or 3 in the morning. He just started sewing because he realized I wouldn't feel a thing, which I didn't. My friends outside ordered pizza. I remember after, they were feeding me these pin-sized bites that night."

If you ever wondered why Viggo was so popular with the cast and crew (quote by Philippa Boyens from the book "Anything you can imagine")

Listening to the cast commentary of The Two Towers, this surprised me: (some of) the cast was unaware that Viggo broke his toes in that scene!

When the helmet-kicking scene is shown, Dominic Monaghan is making a comment on how much he loved Viggo's reaction with the scream, and how he doesn't know if it was in the script that way or not. He doesn't mention the toes at all, it seems obvious he doesn't know about it, and neither does Billy Boyd (I think they were commenting together).

I know this incident only became legendary because of the internet and the fans, but I would have thought the other actors at least knew about it! Especially as the cast commentary was of course recorded after the movie was finished, so quite some time later, you would think Dominic had heard the story already?

On the other hand, Bernard Hill does mention Viggo's two broken toes during the warg attack scene, so he was aware of it.

If I was in any difficult situation, I would like to have Aragorn beside me
