Unexplained symptoms for years and clueless as to what to do next

For around the past 7 years I’ve had serious and recurrent bouts of depression which later built to panic attacks and a feeling that there was something wrong with my heart. For the past 3 and a half years I’ve had bouts of recurrent vomiting which happen around 1-3 times per week.

I feel that all of this may have been linked to recurrent bouts of corticosteroids (methylprednisolone or prednisone) which I had to take for then unresponsive ulcerative colitis. The colitis has thankfully been in a good remission for almost three years now on biological medication but in the 4-5 years leading up to that I had recurrent bouts of high dose steroids which caused all manner of physical and mental health issues which I have never had before, most akin to cushings syndrome. It was on the final dose of steroids around three years ago that I began to get the severe panic attacks.

I’ve tried multiple therapists, three antidepressants and hypnotherapy for the mental health issues. Of these, hypnotherapy and mirtazapine were the most effective.

I’ve tried just about everything for the vomiting and has multiple clear tests. The only thing that does work is ondansetron (zofran) but that feels like symptom relief rather than tackling the root cause.

Does anyone have any idea either what could be going on or what treatments might be useful? I’m open to anything that’s genuinely been helpful. Currently looking into vagus nerve stuff but I’ve been through so many things that I now struggle to make myself feel optimistic about any new approach.

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

How far in advance should I book a hotel in Berlin for the first weekend of September?

Travelling to Berlin over the weekend of the 4th-7th September. Looking at price comparison sites, the price for that weekend seem higher than for the weekends in August. I’m wondering if this is because prices in Berlin tend to drop last minute (due to last minute empty rooms/cancellations etc) or if September is just more expensive in general?

Is it best for me to book now to avoid disappointment or to hold out a few weeks and hope that prices go down?

Many thanks.

Reheating beef temperature

A few hours ago, I reheated some beef cuts, which had been slow cooked the night before (and refrigerated in between). However made a stupid mistake and reheated them to 63 Celsius rather than 73 Celsius. I ate them and served them to my partner, who realised they were slightly cold but presumed it was just that they’d cooled a bit since coming out of the oven. So we both ate them.

How much of a problem is this?

What are some things that embody the ‘Irish diaspora’ experience?

I (mid thirties, born in England with three Irish grandparents) would add:

  1. Ferries from Holyhead to Dublin in the 90s
  2. Supporting England until Ireland are playing, then supporting Ireland
  3. The Pogues
  4. Sinead O Connor
  5. Christy Moore
  6. Catholic school
  7. Going for pints at Irish centres in grim north of England towns
  8. Mild feeling of sadness/nostalgia that Ireland is now an expensive holiday
  9. Telling a priest I’d had an argument with my 10 year old sister in first confession

What are yours?

How to tell if I’m having a flare or just ill (and whether to take Humira)

Since the weekend I’ve been off work, extremely fatigued, with muscular aches, cold sweats and fever dreams each night. Those symptoms have slowly improved (but not completely gone). However, in the past 36 hours I’ve had a few bouts of diarrhoea, with no visible blood.

I’ve been in remission on Humira for 3+ years now, but I’m wondering if this is a flare?

The thing I’m unsure about is- today I am due for my bi-weekly humira injection. If it’s a flare, I should obviously take it. However, if I’ve got a viral illness, I think it’s a bad idea to take humira as it can increase the risk of infections?

I won’t be able to speak to a specialist until the day after tomorrow. Just wondering what others would do in this situation. Does it sound like a flare or an incidental illness?
