Opening any PDFs locks up the browser

So it only started about a week or two ago. If I am browsing and go to open a PDF, it downloads the PDF and Acrobat launches just fine, loads the PDF, but then FF just locks up. Nothing activates on mouseover -- not another tab, menus won't launch, and clicking the X does nothing. But only FF -- I can launch other programs over it and minimize them. Right clicking FF icon in the taskbar launches the menu, but "Close Program" does nothing.

The only thing I can do is End Task and relaunch, but for some critical websites, I have to be able to progress further.

It almost feels like there is an invisible dialog box or element that loads concurrently and which needs interaction, so I tried disabling UBO, but no luck there.

One thing I noticed just now is that when I tried to create a new user account on a critical website, the page with the embedded Terms and Conditions loads, but the terms didn't load in the embedded window -- FF DL'd it and launched it in Adobe, and the page itself is blank but for an empty white text box, a "I agree" checkbox that won't let me click on, and a grayed out submit button. So it's like it's supposed to be an embedded PDF, but something is deciding to load it externally while locking up the browser.

Help, please!

ELI5: What would it take for us to "photograph" (render an image of) the supermassive black hole of the Milky Way?

Edit: well, I feel silly. I had even seen that image already, but thought it was another one in proximity to us. TY for the gracious replies.
