Frequently criticized tropes that don’t deserve the flak they get
I’m definitely not the first person to pick up on this. These are tropes that are usually called out as cliché, bad, unrealistic, etc., but honestly make sense, aren’t that bad, etc.
Yelling “hello” when you think someone is there (Backrooms - Clark does this several times) - a classic of horror movies. Someone thinks they see movement/hears a noise, and responds by yelling “hello” or the like. People criticize it as not making sense, as if a serial killer is gonna be like “yeah, I’m over here, bro.”
But the principle makes sense. Sure, yelling “hello” isn’t always the most natural response, but the instinct to check if you’re alone or not is very real. If you’ve ever locked up a workplace and thought you heard someone, you know the feeling of just want to make sure.
That profession isn’t actually like that (Law and Order - frequently criticized for this) - most common with things like police, lawyers, doctors, etc. The way their profession is portrayed is way crazier than real life, and you hardly ever seen anyone doing paperwork.
This one is kinda silly. For sure it can be egregious, but yeah, it’s called dramatization. Most jobs are pretty mundane. A realistic cop drama is mostly parking tickets and paperwork. That’s boring, so fiction gonna fiction.
Killer robots (I, Robot - plenty to criticize in this movie, and I hear this one frequently) - this is more of a personally one. Anytime a movie has robots that are way stronger, faster, smarter than humans, I’ll hear people complain it’s unrealistic cause “why would we ever build that?”
When you look at the history of computers, all we ever do is make them faster, smarter, and more durable. If we ever crack robotics, we’ll have killer robots in like a week.
What is the mural?
There’s a mural in Columbus OH that I frequently pass, and for the life of me, I can’t figure out what groups these flags together. Is it some organization I’ve never heard of? Commemorating a sporting event? Some battle that took place involving these countries? Or did someone really just pick random flags and make a mural?
It doesn’t help that the mural is faded, and I can’t find any info on it.
Sorry for the shit pictures by the way, my phone is old and the camera is fucked up.
The Goon Has Self-Preservation
Iron Man 3 - After Tony takes out a room of guards, the last guy decides this job isn’t worth it.
Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman - A goon walks into a room and finds Batman standing there. He silently leaves the room, and reports an all clear.
The Town - After a shootout and car chase, a group of bank robbers find themselves parked right next to a cop. This cop decides he doesn’t want to die in the line of duty.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens - As Kylo Ren is freaking out, a couple of stormtroopers decided to go another way.
Ya know what, I agree
Gotta love a meme you don’t even need to change in order to shift the message. No one should have the right to murder their children anywhere
