PUL – hCG went from 8.3 to 19 in 48 hours after heavy bleeding. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hi everyone, I’m currently being monitored by the Early Pregnancy Unit for a pregnancy of unknown location (PUL) and I’m wondering if anyone has experienced something similar and what the outcome was.

I believe I ovulated around 29–30 July. I got my first faint positive pregnancy test around 9 August (roughly 10–11 DPO).

A few days later I started spotting, which progressed into really heavy, period-like bleeding with cramps. The cramps were sometimes more noticeable on my left side, although they felt like period cramps rather than sharp/severe one-sided pain.

Because of the bleeding and pain I was referred to EPU. I’ve now had two transvaginal ultrasounds and nothing was visible in my uterus or elsewhere. They also didn’t see an obvious ectopic pregnancy. My hCG was extremely low:

Thursday 13th Aug: 8.3
Saturday 15th Aug: 19

So despite all the bleeding, my hCG has actually increased by around 129% in 48 hours.

My bleeding has now almost completely stopped and I currently have no pain at all. I’m having another hCG blood test on Monday.

Initially I assumed I’d had a chemical pregnancy/miscarriage because of how much I bled, but the rise in hCG has confused me. EPU are continuing to monitor me as a PUL.

Has anyone had very low starting hCG like this, with heavy period-like bleeding, followed by hCG more than doubling? What did your next hCG do, and did it eventually turn out to be a normal intrauterine pregnancy, a miscarriage or an ectopic?

I know nobody here can diagnose me and I’m following EPU’s advice, I’m mainly looking for experiences from anyone whose numbers/symptoms were similar.
