Screw size for Bakelite door handles.

Greetings

I haven't been able to get an intact one out and I don't want to damage them.

Does anyone know the size? I'm off to Bunnings tomorrow and surely they have something.

Anything is better than this.

EDIT Thank you everyone for your ongoing help.🌻

Did not make it to a Hardware store today but will listen to the advice regarding Mitre 10 also.

We had an amazing polder gentleman renovate our neighbours bungalow.

I may contact him as he apparently has a lot of stuff in storage and is a very knowledgeable person.

More fun at the new old house continues...

Greetings team

This week

Wooden windows.

So one of the first things I did was get someone in to repair all the putty.

It was bad.

Especially since the house had not had any work done since 2016 that we know of.

House was closed up, most windows screwed shut and even after putty replacement around 6 months ago, some timber is still wet.

Is dirty and has old mouldy black muck.

I have only done a basic wipe down.

(When I rented my last house the back door was like this.

The wood wasn't painted and a lot of water had come through).

Haven't dealt with this yet because I have been waiting for the putty to dry to clean the wood.

This is only on one side of the building that was closed up.

People were using this place as a grow house as far as we know.

But what we do definitely know is they never cleaned anything.

I have every cleaning product under the sun, every mould remover and every type of sandpaper.

But I'm concerned about it bring wet.

Some sage advice please as to how to proceed.

Thank you all kindly for your input. 🫖☕

Rent reduction calculator regarding flooding

Anyone here' work in any areas where we could calculate this?

House areas inhabitable

1 bedroom inside

Kitchen

Bathroom with toilet

Areas damaged/contaminated by flooding/mud

Sleepout (second bedroom written in tenancy agreement

Has been used as studio workshop)

Garage

Decking ( covers half section)

Clothesline area behind building

Garden ( mud pit with broken fences )

Driveway (musd has mostly been washed away)

Fences down

Was 400 per week as house is old and poorly maintained.

House is half a bungalow.

Other side is empty.

Thank you 🌻

Healthy homes assessment

Greetings

We have just been through the floods and we are having some issues with our landlord.

To cut a very long story shot,, the Sustainability trust and tenancy have advised us to get our own healthy homes assessment done as tenants. They only offer the service to landlords etc.

We will be leaving in a few months but these issues have gone on for nearly 14 years

The fact we have to stay here another winter was not on the cards.

Does anyone know of any companies in Wellington who will do this for tenants?

Please don't tell me it's my landlords responsibility.

I have known this for a long time.

But I understand the law and the concern people have.

The situation here is deeply complicated.

Any suggestions gladly welcomed.

Thank you very much. 🕊️

More fun at the new old house

Greetings again

So we are dealing to the kitchen cupboards.

What a bloody mess they were and don't get me started on what they used as filler.

Or the pieces of recycled MDF furniture they used to block of the old meat locker. 🥳

I'm trying to work out a way to remove this ancient sticky cupboard paper.

I found some cool vintage looking blue stuff to replace it with.

It seriously does not want to come off.

Any amazing tips and tricks?

Thank you kindly 😊

Getting stuff sent to Wellington

Getting large items sent to Wellington from other cities

Greetings

I have paid for a second hand Axminster rug but I need to organise shipping myself.

It needs to be sent here from Napier

I've been trying all night to find a company to do this.

Rug is 15 kg but has been packed down to just over a metre long.

I know about Mainfreight but is there a cheaper alternative?

Anyone had to do this before?

Thank you kindly 😊

Vintage door hardware

Old door hardware

Greetings knowledgeable people.😀

Spent about 4 hours hunting for old door hardware for the vintage house.

Questions

Is there an official store in Wellington called "Knobs and knockers"?

Is it in Petone? Does it have a website?

I have found a few things in TradeMe.

Is there somewhere else I can look?

I'm after some bakelite.

Metal handles for the front door (it's bad).

Probably plates.

I think I've found some on TradeMe but just wondering there is a more physical go to place in Wellington?

Or some stash somewhere cheaper?

I can take some photos tomorrow.

It's mainly the front door and the bathroom.

I managed to save one knob.

Also the small screws for the knobs that go onto the metal rod. Any ideas?

Most of the bakelite in the old new place is intact.

Some of it was split and faded out.

I guess these is no way to bring it's colour back to life?

But a lot of the knobs are held in by big ugly screws.

I guess it was what their dodgy cowboys used at the time.

Thanks for your time 👍

Glass Louvers

Old glass louvers

Greetings

It looks like we will be in this cold house for a couple more months till our new one is ready.

We have a large set of glass louvers at one end of the house (entrance way/boot room/laundry)

And no doors between them and the kitchen and then the lounge/bedroom.

I know. But we are leaving 👍

I have always used heavy velvet drapes.

I was wondering if there is some sort of seal we can buy to attach to the outside of the louvers to cover the gaps but still open them.

The only example I can think of is clear door draught stop seals like Moroday door seals.

Any ideas?

Thank you everyone.
