Is anyone else sick of the school shooting jokes?
Hiya, first time posting here after lurking a bit.
I've been living in the UK for 7 years now, and pretty much the only thing I still haven't adjusted fully to is the social interaction differences.
Something that's bothered me deeply since the beginning, and has only gotten worse over time, is how cavalier people are about school shootings, and often how genuinely funny people seem to find them???
For reference, I actually WAS in a school shooting. I don't find the jokes funny at all, and I really think it shows not only a complete lack of empathy, but basic humanity. In what universe is it even remotely acceptable to joke about traumatised, injured, or even dead children???
I know it stems from them not really getting it, which is great (obviously I don't wish other countries would have the same issue), but I would literally never do this about any other similar situation. I don't really think people just not thinking about it is an acceptable excuse.
I get this attitude constantly. I've had people make jokes and expect me to find it hilarious, send memes, bring it up as the first point of conversation after finding out I'm American, and frustratingly, make it a retort to literally ANY criticism of anything ever about the UK or anywhere else in Europe (said as a gleeful "well at least we don't have school shootings!!!!!!", cue laughter from everyone around).
Idk y'all. I'm tired.
Edit: I honestly didn't expect this to be controversial, and it's kind of bumming me out. Can I please ask that people spare me the downvotes and instead extend some basic empathy to me, as a literal victim of a school shooting.
I'm sorry if this was the wrong subreddit to post, I just figured there might be some community/people that understand here. I guess the people commenting that even Americans don't seem to care about school shootings aren't wrong, lmao.
